Hello, This is my first post to this list although I have been a subscriber for some time and have followed the list with interest. It seems that there are a lot of generous people doing lookups. Now it's my turn to ask a favour. My Husband's great grandfather,Robert YOUNG, was born in Burutislaud Scotland in 1822. He belonged to the family that owned Young's Brewery in Edinburgh. He married (in Sydney Australia) Mary KEITH, who was born in Edinburgh in 1832. Could some kind person please do a lookup in a Census or other likely source? Grateful thanks, Hilda in Australia.
Robyn I do not know why Scottish Census dates were a day later than the English ones. I just have this info in my notes and have not investigated it further. Does anyone know? For the benefit of other listers, UK Census dates were 1841 June 6/7. 1851 March 30/31 1861 April 7/8 1871 April 2/3 1881 April 3/4 1891 April 5/6 Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: John & Robyn Fulton <fultonjr@bigpond.com> To: Judy Wardlaw <jwardlaw@netspace.net.au> Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2001 5:04 AM Subject: RE: [EDB] census > Thanks Judy, but why the difference. A big thank you to everyone who replied to my census question especially Pearl who gave me a complete list of all dates for future reference. Robyn
A couple of people on this list have sent me mails which I haven't answered due to yet another OE crash. Just too many mails bringing the thing to its knobbly little knees. Anyway, anyone who hasnt had a reply they expected, please resend, off list of course. Sorry to clutter up the list. Judy
the obvious place/s to start are to look in the 1881/1891 censuses for Tobias and/or get hold of his marriage cert - since you mention the church does that mean you already have that info??? Could anyone tell me what month the 1881 census was taken. I have a birth certificate dated May 1848 and a census record of his brother stating age at 34 which would make his birth year 1847. But from the names it does not make sense. The "48 certificate" name is the same as the father. The brother is not named for either grandfather. With thanks Robyn in Sydney where winter has finally arrived.
Hi Judy: I have the same dates for the Scottish & English Census. I think the Census was taken as of the night of eg: 1841 June 6th/7th, 1851 March 30th/31st. I was told, it was anyone in the house as of that night to the next day. If I am wrong, please correct me. Hi Margaret: I would think this Wellington Street was in Edinburgh as the marriage said "both of this parish". I went to this site http://www.streetmap.co.uk and found Lyndoch Place and Wellington Street both in Edinburgh so I can only guess these are the places. Would anyone know if these were in St Cuthberts Parish of 1825. I will post the other marriages from the page in case it will help someone. On next message. RELLIES AND SKS help please: reply ONLY if you recognize these associations, not just these surnames. The only polite way I can phrase it is to say it will be a waste of both of our efforts if you are outside this family grouping. It will do neither of us any good to respond just to surnames, because I cannot assist otherwise. You must know and have these definite connections as outlined below and know the connective data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- MY GREAT GRANDPARENTS William Fraser, [b. abt. 1859, Nairn] m. William, lived in Nairn, but accurate registration is not known. Only an 1891 census may sort it out [see further on]. Parents of William are noted below but his whole side of the family is unknown, as per any data. An SKS who can access a marriage certificates, if they are able, could help with the parents. Hi Judy Thank you very much, yes, it does look now like Lynedoch Place. Back then a young lady of age 23/24 didn't go off from North Uist to marry a person without an escort. This is why I would like to find who also lived at this address. Any other ideas, is the place still there. Thanks so much. Hello Everyone: I have just joined this List as I have just located a marriage for Mary Arbuckle and Alexander McKenzie in St Cuthberts, Oct. 3, 1825. Mary's address is given as No. 6 Lyncloch Place and it does say both of this Parish. Would anyone know of a way to find out who else was living there at this time. I am hoping to find Mary's brother John Arbuckle as he has been elusive. Alexander McKenzie's address was given as No 13 Wellington Street which was probably in the same area. Any assitance would be appreciated. Lorraine Ottawa, Canada
HI everyone, I am new to this list and have joined as I have some information in some documents I have, that I though might be of interest. They all concern a property lying on the East side of "the street called Saint Leonards Wynd leading from the Cowgate.to the high Pleasants" The first document is dated 29th June 1785 and is for a loan of £300 (a lot of money then!) from Thomas TOD merchant to John MEGGET merchant, I think that the property is perhaps used as security or perhaps the money was to purchase the property? I haven't read it all as it is difficult to follow and goes on for over 5 sides of roughly A4!. The document mentions many people including Patrick (HENRY?) Tobaconist Helen SCOULER of Southfield widow of Robert Hunter officer of excise John CRAWFORD stabler James DUN Duncan MacFARLANE Robert SIMPSON John SIMPSON mason William THOMSON James LIBBERTON William SCOULER tanner in Pleasence The second document is dated 14th July 1796 and is to discharge the loan. The 3rd documnent dated 1820 is a"Disposition and Afsignation by Mary STRATTON in favour of Peter FERGUSON. The 4th document is dated 1845 and is a "Charter of Resignation by City of Edinburgh in favour of James FERGUSON Pawnbroker only son of Peter FERGUSON. If you think any information relates to families you are researching then I will examine them more closely and give you further details. Hope this proves of interest.
