Listers...to honour our comrades in these tumultuous time, we owe it to them to get on with life as "usual," if it could ever approach that. Personally, I am going to delete all files for the remainder of the week and then start up with my usual whining and complaining for data next week. I need to go into retreat and do some "powerful cogitating." Over 400 listers responded in the affirmative to my mailing and to those of others. That just about makes up the majority of listers. I have noted 5 listers upset about something, not sure what. Two retracted their earlier sentiments and I was just unapproachable. Out of respect for our varied levels of disgust and patriotism may I suggest, humbly, for I know that all have expressed strong supportive emotions, that we continue in our efforts to root out those wee bugs in our genealogical files. Like our American brothers and sisters, it is time to get back to work and let the professionals get on with their business. We must not let this creep into our affairs any longer. Passions are beginning to be too close to the surface in some people and things which should be left unsaid are floating to the surface. As a brief aside, this rings awfully similar to ages past when such atrocities were done to our respective ancestors, but on an obviously and relatively lesser scale of destruction and coversion. We might say a prayer, which we never considered before, for those of our kith and kin that suffered long ago from their own ignominy. I did my bit...and am still feeling positive about it. But there is nothing more to be done "in the now," and a lot to be done with the past. Thank you all for your heartfelt sympathies and God Bless the suffered and the suffering. Hello! Am new to this list. My lines from Scotland are Critch or Critchton, Sterling, Milner, Thompson, Smalley. Is anyone on the List researching these names? I know qiite a bit about these families, of course, after the ancestors arrived in the United States. Richard Critch - 1635 Isaac Sterling - 1663 These are my main lines, along with the Godwins, who came from England in the 1600's. If anyone is searching these lines I'd like to know what you have found. Will be so happy to share what I know on these families. Sincerely, Leola Starling
Dear Fellow Researchers: Could I please ask someone to help me with the 1891 census? I know my Nanny, Mary THOMSON, lived at 2 Forbes Street in Edinburgh, and her father's name was Thomas Thomson. He has two wives, one named Mary. I think Nanny was born about 1894, but would like to find out which wife was with my great-grandfather in 1891. If anyone has suggestions as to how I could get this data, or the name of someone who does certificate and/or census searches, I would love to hear about it. Good hunting, Sandra corradini@accglobal.net
Hi Judy I have just been browsing through the mailing list and noticed that you have been to Jamaica Street in Edinburgh. I have been looking for info on this street as my ggg grandfather lived there in 1826 (I think according to Pigots Directory) and I am hoping that his son was born there around that time. I saw that you mentioned St Stephens and I am going to try and order the Parish Records at the LDS family history centre next week, As I know nothing about this person (Yet!) can you suggest any other churches or chapels close by that might of been used by the residents? Also if I am going to search for Census info would Jamaica street be in the parish of St Stephens? I can not find information about the Edinburgh Parishes only a list of names such as Cannongate and St Cuthbert's etc so I am unsure which parish this falls into. hello David if you post Andrew BROWNs occupation someone might be able to cross reference the post office directory. The address could then be found in the street index, which would lead directly to the correct part of the film. Just a thought. Only works for certain occupations of course. Judy PS I use to work in Thistle St Lane. Its all still there of course. ---------- >From: Claretnut@aol.com >To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [EDB] 1871 Census - Lookup Request >Date: Sun, Sep 2, 2001, 7:31 pm > > Does SKS with access to the 1871 Census have the time to look for a Helen > Euphemia BROWN (aged 13) whose parents were Andrew BROWN (b Edinburgh c1816) > and Helen TERRAS (b Balmerino 1819)? > > Possible addresses are in Thistle Street or Northumberland Place.

Do any of you recognize the following MC entry? I am looking for James' first wife, siblings, parents' details, dates...etc. I have all of Cecilia's details but none of James'. This is my first venture up this line. James Kemp, Jr. -m. 01 Oct., 1875, at 6 Fettes Row, Edinburgh -a Typecutter -widower [??] -age 35 -6 James Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh -Father: James Kemp, Sr., Tinsmith [Journeyman], dec. -Mother: Margaret Kemp ms Gordon, dec. [cousin] -m. Cecilia Dempster -widow [Lauchlan John Dempster] -age 32 -6 James Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh -Father: William Lindsay, Waiter -Mother Ann Lindsay ms Gordon, dec. -It says she and James Kemp were cousins (German). They had two children from their union, George and Cecilia. No data can be found on them either. The Minister was Alexander MacKenzie of the Free Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh and the witnesses John Minto and Helen Reid. Thanking you in advance...Alan Kemp Dempster
I cannot recall which list was asking why many emigrated to the West Indies...one of my rellies did... But, I stumbled on this site for Edinburgh, which looks interesting... Nothing of a specific genealogical nature as such, but lots on old Edinburgh and the like. http://www.scran.ac.uk/ Here, was found the following quote along one of the links: "Not all emigrants went voluntarily. Some Jacobite prisoners of war were sent to the West Indies as indentured servants after the 1745 rising, while Australia was originally a convict colony." My rellie was a Dr., so one can assume that he, for one, went to care for the "white" inhabitants of the islands, or the staffs/staves of the European land owners. Now, we cannot say that because of this quote all emigrés were "indentured servants," they may just as well have been legitimate emigrés ...or trying to stay one step ahead of the baillie!

James Forman a baker in Richmond's Street married Elizabeth Square at St Cuthbert's in 1780. Their first child was baptised at St Cuthbert's but all the rest of their kids in "Edinburgh Parish". Can anyone tell me 1. if West Richmond St (as it is now) is the Richmond's Street of 1780? If not where was it? 2. The extent of "Edinburgh Parish" from 1787. 3. John Forman rented a seat (No 59 2/5) in New Church from Martinmas 1810 for a year for 11 shillings. However on the reverse of the receipt someone has written "Receipt- seat in the High Church to Martinmass 1811". Can anyone say what Church this referred to? (All his children & grandchildren are buried at St Cuthbert's but most children were christened in "Edinburgh Parish"). Would St Giles be referred to as "New Church" (ie perhaps after rebuilding ca 1780?) Andrew Forman Royal Oak Yard, Skipton, N. Could someone please tell me in which Parish, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh,-and- Free Tollbooth Church are? I am searching for info on the addresses of 6 Fettes Row, Edinburgh,-and- 6 James Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh. Thanks in advance...Al
hi Greg All things come to those that wait blah blah I cant access your old messages due to another email *uck up (that's muck up of course) but I had printed your posting and your heartfelt plea lay in the bottom of my bag along with the old bus tickets etc. Maybe someone has already done it, but if not: Mr Thomas Cleghorn Mercht N2 George St & Mifs Janet Nisbet N40 Northumberland Street both in St Andrews Parish 3 Procla & no Objections Married 27th by the Revd John Inglis Minister of Green Law. this is as close as I can get to the script using a keyboard. I have a lovely clear photocopy which you can have if you send your snail mail off list. Not the full width as the Edinburgh library service can't afford the different lens, so you don't get the 'Cleghorn' in the margin but the entry itself is complete. Now here's the weird stuff. When I got home I noticed the entry immediately above - Mr James Bowman Mercht - actually has Janet Nisbet scored out and then Margaret Nicolson written instead. the address that follows is N40 Northumberland St. The new name does not replace the old but continues on from it ie the writer had already corrected the brides name before writing the address. This entry is on the top edge of the copy but from the descending strokes the two grooms' addresses may also be the same. And the third bride on the photocopy was also from Northumberland St but her fathers name is given and there is no house number! Whilst I was still at the library I checked the Post Office directories for 1827-8, 1826-7, 1821-22, 1819-20, 1818-19. There were no Thomas Cleghorns and no Cleghorns in George St. For a couple of those years I also checked Leith. Maybe your Thomas was working for one of the other Cleghorns as there were a few of merchant status or equivalent in the New Town area. I was also looking (without success) for Ann Carson's CHISHOLM so my last gasp was a look at the 1800 directory. This showed Cleghorn Thomas, Esq No 27. Prince's Street (sic). I did notice a couple of Miss Nisbet's in these directories. And in 1826-7 I struck lucky. Nisbet, Miss 40 Northumberland Street. As so often, all this seems to raise as many questions as it answers, but that's show biz. In 1818-19 and 1827-8 there was a Miss Nisbet at 6 Nelson Street. In 1819-20 there is an Archibald Nisbet, writer at 11 Nelson St. Nelson Street is at right angles from one end of Northumberland St. Is there a connection here? One possibility that occured to me was that there were two Nisbet sisters who owned several houses, which they occasionally occupied and other times let out, but that really is just speculation. As for Green Law, I would think that is Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders. My earliest source at home is for 1838 and lists the Church of Scotland minister as Abraham Home, altho the United Associate minister was David Inglis. The fact that this is a banns record and you havent found a marriage as such might indeed suggest a secessionist church. there are other sources which can confirm this for you. Happy hunting Judy happy hunting Judy
