Contact Carol Hepburn at chepburn@uswest.net Hello, all, I have a similar query. The address I am interested in is 11 East Thistle St, Edinburgh. My G-G-Grandfather, Lewis Matthew Gregory JOHNSTON, was a teacher of fencing and gymnastics and held classes at that address, according to the Post Office Directory from 1830's to about 1850's. In 1998 a friend took a photo for me of a building in Thistle St, but didn't know at the time that there might be an East or West Thistle St. Any help would be most gratefully received. I have not been able to find William born 1857, at Woodhall, Pencaitland. His Mother was Janet DAVIDSON unmarried, & father not mentioned. He has half sister Georgina LAMB, & half brother & sister, with the surname MONTGOMERY. It is possible that the younger three, share the same Father, Peter. Janet DAVIDSON married Thomas LIVINGSTON , of Broomrig, in 1859, but the 1861 census shows William as DAVIDSON. By now he has another half sister Susan LIVINGSTON. Peter MONTGOMERY the brother, ( ? half,) of William , moved with his family, to Edinburgh after 1891. Does anyone have a record of a William DAVIDSON, could he have moved there with Peter. ? Or, does anyone have a William with mother Janet DAVIDSON, ( & unmarried to the Father, ) but with the possibility that William became known by the name of his Father who could of course be anyone. However possibles being MONTGOMERY, LIVINGSTON. Janet may have been a free spirit but she has caused me a lot of problems. Mary

Hilda Could be you mean Wm.Younger & Sons. I have no written down info, but there is a brewery internet site I found when this came up before. Most of the breweries now seem to have headquarters in England now but the 1891 Ordnance Survey map showed a cluster of about seven in the Holyrood, Abbeyhill area. What I think I remember from 60 years ago is the above name and it may have included ' ,Holyrood Brewery'. My Great Uncle had a picture of an old gent with tophat and tail coat and a piece about getting Younger every day. Jim McArthur Invercargill NZ
Thank you to Sheila, Jim and John for your replies. Much appreciated, Hilda in Australia.
Sorry I missed the original request. John Young of Musselburgh opened his Ladywell Brewery in Fisherrow in 1830 before moving to Musselburgh around 1890 (still Ladywell Brewery). I can remember as a young man, in the 1960's, being in their office where the staff still sat on stools at high desks which had inkwells !! The firm was taken over by Whitbread Breweries in 1968. They were essentially a "local" brewery and has no connection whatever with the William Younger Brewer's. If who ever it was who posted the query gets in touch off list I can expsnd this for them. The Scottish Brewing Archive (Formerly held by Heriot-Watt University near Edinburgh) is now held by the University of Glasgow. See the following link: http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/sba/default.html And in the event that you may be referring to the "William Younger" Brewery that occupied facilities in Leith and (later) the Canongate area - the current Corporation (Scottish and Newcastle) has a general history page: http://www.scottish-newcastle.com/corporate/history.html Hope this helps, Sheila
Hi Listers, Can anyone give me any information on the Young Brewery in Edinburgh. Thanks Hilda in Australia.
Hello again Meg The nearest Churches (all Church of Scotland) to Tipperlinn Road were Candlish, John Ker Memorial, Morningside Parish, Morningside High and South Morningside. Most of them are no longer in existence, but records will be held both at Register House, and some at the church offices at 121, George Street, Edinburgh, EH2. Tel: 0131-225-5722. Doreen
Hullo Meg, There are currently 3 persons wih the name Halcro in the public telephone listing for Edinburgh. None of them is resident in or near Tipperlinn Road. There are also several Halcrows in the directory. Tipperlinn road is in a quiet residential area (Morningside) on the southside of Edinburgh. It is near George Watson's College and The Royal Edinburgh Hospital. You should be able to find it on an online map. You mentioned that "Certainly he was involved in some kind of community or church activity". I suggest that you give some details of that as it might be helpful in getting closer to what you want to find. Eunice Smith Edinburgh, Scotland

Hello Meg, I can send you the postal address of a researcher for HALCROW from 1720-1965 in Fetlar, Yell, and Northmavine in Shetland. He lives in the Shetland Isles. Any use to you ? Hi all! I have good news to tell. I have been posting messages and information for 2 years. I have been doing manual research for almost 10 years. I had discovered my grandmother was a family of 10. All born late 1800s. I could not find information on 2 brothers that emigrated 1920, to Australia. I posted on New Zealand, Australia most British sites. Everywhere I could. 2 months ago I received a reply from a New Zealand site. The posting was one of my original. The reply was not from my relation. BUT from someone who "thinks" that he might know the grandson of one of the brothers. Contact was made. YES! It was the grandson. We have already met. He came over to UK last week. He did not know that he had any relatives in UK. We are constantly e-mailing. There is almost 80 years of news to catch up on. So my message is don't just delete an e-mail because it has no connection with you. You may know the family. And NEVER NEVER give up. Regards to all who read this to the end. Rena McKenzie researching:- Clark, McCulloch,Sinclair,Fernie,Noble,Cathie,Kyle,Souter and Watters. All Edinburgh.
Genny, we are all here, reading your post and wishing we could help! Don't give up on us! I'm looking for1600s, early 1700s, Richard or Nichlas Crich (crichton), Isaac Sterling (Stirling) and John Thompson (Thomson), all believed to be from the Edinburgh area. No news yet on them but I keep on hoping! I believe everyone on this List reads our letters, just don't know any answers at the moment but may know somethting later! Keep checking! Sincerely, Leola Starling (USA)
Looking for any further info for Robert Pratt born in Leith about 1810. I know he married Isabella Robertson in 1833 in Dundee, and they had 12 children. Can someone offer me advice on finding an obituary for a family member who died in 1948 ? James HALCRO died in Edinburgh on July 13, 1948. Was astounded to see he was single, so there are no descendants for me to locate and ask about him. This was the last family member for me to find of a family of 10 from Orkney, Scotland. Edinburgh is large, would someone be more likely to be buried in a cemetery near their home? I have no clue as to where he was buried. Certainly he was involved in some kind of community or church activity. He was a 'general labourer', so that won't help with any sort of professional group. He died at 15 Tippertinin Road, aged 79. The witness was Jenny L EBINDLE, listed as Occupier. Can someone clarify that term ? There were no other family members in Edinburgh, I have not found any one now living that even knew of his existence, including a great-nephew in Edinburgh, born a few years before his death. Might there be hospital records, the death certificate shows Cardiac failure 6 months ? Is there someone on this List that perhaps knows what is/was at this address ? Any assistance gratefully received - Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA
