    3. Would anyone have any information about a Bert (Herbert) AITKEN or his family. Bert trained at the Royal College of Music in London, and sang with the D'Oyley Carte Opera Company in the early 1900's. He was born and lived in Edinburgh, and his mother seems to have died there c.1950. I'd be very grateful for any leads about this family, or anything about Opera/Theatre Companies in Edinburgh. Many thanks, Cyndy _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Riving billets with a froe, which means splitting logs using a metal knife thing that you beat with a beetle (wooden club or hammer). traditionally the best wood was chestnut (horse or sweet) and oak (but that was costly). later on sawn softwood was used. The laths were then used for lath and plaster which is part of the traditional construction of houses in this neck of the woods. I am trying to determine which parish my ggrandmother belonged to. She was born Helen STORKE or STROKE to Silas STORKE or STROKE and Ann GOWANS STORKE or STROKE on the 7 April 1873 (or 1874) in "New Edinburgh" Scotland according to her death certificate. The "New" has me confused. I was wondering if this might be a refernce to the parish name. I believe her to belong to the Church of Scotland, but I am not positive at this time. Since I am writing to the list anyway, does anyone know which name STORKE or STROKE is more likely to be the correct name. I would appreciate help from anyone. Thank you to Judy and the list in advance for any assistance! Lorrie Schneck@charter.net confused in WI, USA

    3. A friend has sent this query to me and as we are both stumped I thought I'd post it and see if anyone has any ideas. My first impression was Jamboiler! Now then, one of MY rellies, female, gave as her occupation in the 1841 census something that looks like : Jamboner ; Iamboiler ; Jamboirer.............. Wish I had a scanner to send it to you. The first letter is an "I" or a "J", the "b" is a definate, the "oi" or "on" could be a "w" ; further down the page it's writen again, the person concerned is also female. Any theories ?? I've just looked again and the "J" could be a "T". thanks Carol

    3. I am looking for DAVIDSON families in Leith who were related to Jenny ( Janet ) Dick, maiden name MONTGOMERY. Jenny was my Grandmother, born 1882, Whitlaw farm, Regd. district of Lauder, & married & lived in Crieff, Perthshire. The words used were " Jenny used to visit DAVIDSON cousins in Leith." She died in 1956. Her unmarried dau. Helen may have continued contact, possibly with Christmas cards only, but not in, at least the last 10 years, probably much longer than that.. Mary New Zealand.

    3. I was told that my Grandmother was in touch with MONTGOMERY family in Leith. She was Jenny ( Janet ) Montgomery dau. of Peter & Helen M.S. DODDS Jenny was born May 1882, at Whitlaw, farm district of Lauder. her Siblings William, John, Robert, Elizabeth ( ? Bessie ) Helen ( Nellie ), Susan, ( Susie ), Euphemia ( ? Phemie ) Marion ( May ). I dont know why all the girls were known by nick names or pet names, seems a bit odd to me. However, I have no contact with any of my Grandmothers family, & would like to do so. Robert & William emmigrated to Canada, & are said to have had no children. I think John was in WW1. I am about to have a researcher look for his records. But as for the others.!! They are probably among the frustratingly unnamed pile of photos that I have. I have their marriage registrations. Is anyone researching families with the above maiden names.? Mary. New Zealand.

    1. [EDB] St Mary's parish
    2. J A Olsen
    3. The Edinburgh Almanac of 1838 describes 'the division of the city of Edinburgh into nine parishes. This is followed by a further set of five parishes 'in the Extended Royalty'. St Mary's is one of these. This was the area covered: "St Mary's Parish comprehends those portions of the Extended Royalty to the east of a line drawn from the northern boundary of said Royalty through the centre of Pitt Street and Dundas Street to a point in the centre of Queen Street opposite to Hanover Street, and on (sic) the north of a line from that point eastwards through the centre of Queen Street, York Place and Picardy Place, and Leith Walk, to the boundary of said Royalty at a point in Leith Walk opposite to Union Street. N.B-The lands of Logie-green, Broughton Park, Blandfield, and Park of Powderhall, being within the Extended Royalty, will fall to be added to St Mary's Parish when feued and built upon. They are included in this description." I'm afraid I dont know the exact extent of the Extended Royalty, but I think this description gives you a good idea of the area involved anyway. You will see I have written 'sic' - I think the description would make better sense if it read 'TO the north of a line...'etc. The next section of the book describes the Municipal Wards of the city and is dated 1835. So I could not be sure that the parish boundary given would apply to an event in 1830. Elsewhere in the book the minister of St Mary's parish is given as Henry GREY AM, who was ordained in 1801 and 'admitted to the city' * in 1820. (*Don't know what this means, but all the parishes with an 'admitted to the city' date are those which had the Town Council as their patron.) If Henry GREY is the minister named in the OPR then I think you have a result. the Scottish Episcopal Communion had six places of worship in the city in c1838: St John Evangelist, Princes Street St Paul's, York Place St Peter's, Roxburgh Place, St Paul's Carrubber's Close St George's, York Place St James', Broughton Place So I think you have a choice of Episcopalian churches WITHIN the boundaries of St Mary's parish, because I suspect at least one of the York Place churches was/is to the north of the boundary line. I think I am right in saying that marriage banns were read in the parish church even for those who married in other denominations? So if you found a marriage record at St Mary's but knew your family were Anglican, you might assume that St Mary's was an Anglican church, when in fact your ancestors were attending another church close by. Hope this helps Judy ---------- >From: "Mary & Andy McKinlay" <wexray@tassie.net.au> >To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [EDB] Burial Ground >Date: Sat, Oct 27, 2001, 9:15 am > > Hello, > Would anyone please know what Burial Ground would be used (around 1830) if > the family attended St. Mary's Parish Church (Anglican) Edinburgh, possibly > Broughton Street? > > Thanking you, Mary from Tasmania > >

    3. Mary, if it was the parish church then it couldnt be Anglican, by definition. The Church of Scotland is the established church in Scotland, and is presbyterian ie no bishops. There are Episcopalian churches in Scotland, and I think these buildings are sometimes referred to as 'the English church'.
