A Colourman was someone who mixed the dyes in the textile trade. The term was also used for assistants to a house painter. Reg in New Zealand reg@clear.net.nz
Hello all I am looking for anybody related to Thomas HOLTUM (1806 - 1879). He married twice. Firstly to Joan ORROCK in Edinburgh in 1834 and secondly to Maria EMMERSON in 1847 in London. He had five children - William, Thomas, Charles, John and Agnes. Agnes married James LILLIE in Edinburgh in 1867. Does anyone recognise any of these families please? Deborah
hullo Carol, This is a long shot for me but it is always worth asking. I am trying to trace a Mary Lindsay or Barnet who was the grandmother of Frank Miller. Frank MIller was living in Annan at the turn of the last century. If you should know of any connections with your line and the names of Barnet or Miller I should be grateful for any information. Eunice Smith Edinburgh, Scotland
hullo Carol, I think that you may be looking for Lennie near Cramond and the River Almond on the north-west side of Edinburgh. There is a Lennie Muir, Lennie Mains, Lennie Gate, Lennie hill, Lennie Quarry, Lennie Cottages. This area is near Turnhouse airport. The name Lennie (Leana or Leanah means meadow in Gaelic). She has information on them from 1802-1902, ( in 1991 ) and may have more now. Another researcher is looking for DENHOLM in Midlothian, but no place specified. He is also looking for HARRIS incase you misread the name HARKES ? If you would like their postal addresses, just ask and I'll send them. Best wishes, Genny.

Hello List: Thought it was about time to repost my interests in the hope there may be someone new out there with some info that might help me get over my stumbling block with my husband's ggrandfather, RICHARD WYLIE, who was born in Scotland about 1836. He immigrated to Canada (no idea when) and married a GRACE SUTHERLAND on November 26, 1861, in the County of Oxford, Province of Ontario, Canada. On his marriage records it is stated that his father and mother were JOHN and JANET (SCOTT) WYLIE. I have no record as to whether his father and mother and/or siblings also came to Canada. Would appreciate any help or suggestions you may have. Ferne, Ontario, Canada
" Someone posted this list of all the Edinburgh Parishes:" This is good to have , but I have a query - Do you have any idea of the date this list applies to? I was hoping to find Greyfriars Parish but don't see it here. Perhaps someone would be able to tell me which listed parish covers that area? thanks Carol
My g-grandmother Helen Harkes married Andrew Denholm in 1876 at Garvald, East Lothian, and then settled in Edinburgh where she had several children. I would like to trace any descendants of this family Doreen
Julie - This isn't as good as a lookup, but it will help someone who is going, OR it will assist you in getting a transcription from a private researcher, OR you can order a cert from the General Register Office yourself from their website. I work with a researcher and can give a good recommendation for her. A transcription of a Marriage entry is 2.50 Pounds Sterling. I think with the Register entry number and parish, a cert from the GRO is about 8.50 Pounds Sterling, and it would be an actual photocopy, as this record is over 100 years old. Surely someone can correct me on this if I am not current in my prices. In 1900, James SLAVIN and Caroline LENENY married in Kilmadock, entry #2. Kilmadock is in Perth county. Note the change in spelling from LEHENY to LENENY in the Register Index. Not sure if this was a typo in the Index book, or it was actually registered as LENENY. Usually was the custom to marry in the Bride's parish, perhaps this is where Caroline was from. Thought I would post my brick wall and see in anyone has any tips or ideas to help. I have a marriage between Peter McPhilips and Catherine McCall in Edinburgh 25.11.1832. I have seen the entry on microfilm at Central Library, it is very brief. He was a labourer residing in Meal market Stairs, Greyfriars Parish she was residing in what looks like Duniplace Parish (Dunipace?) There are no ages or parents names and I don't know where to start with the 1841 census. They are the parents of my ggf Mathew Philip, named and given as deceased on his marriage cert, but as yet I have not been able to find his birth cert. I have one possible birth of a Philip child born 1837 at Inveresk, no name, sex or parents names given. Does anyone know what this is likely to mean? I have looked at LDS and their marriage is there but no children listed. I have checked Scots-origins online and can't find their deaths. Any and all help would be gratefully received! thanks Carol
Hi Carol, I am sorry I cannot help you. I have a Malcolm McCall/McCaull. Have you ever run across that name?? He was married to Agnes Hodge in Edinburgh I believe. I have not really gotten too far in Scotland. I wonder if anyone is going to be at the register house in Edinburgh any time soon could they maybe check some info for me? I'm looking for a marriage for a James Slavin and a Caroline Leheny in 1900. I don't know exactly where they got married or what date but if anyone could help me I'd really appreciate it. thank you in advance, Julie
