Judy: Both occupations are from "The Edinburgh Marriage Register, 1595 - 1700. Coriar: ,, Margaret [Aitkin]; Andrew Russell, coriar 16 Nov. 1643 " George [Anderson], coriar ; Magdalene Clerk 21 May 1646 etc. Douker: " William [Haddington], douker ; Catharine Alison 12 Mar. 1687 I have only run across one entry for "douker." My "The Concise Scots Dictionary" has a number of meanings for "dook/douk." relating to ducks, bathing and mining. Coriar, or anything like it doesn't occur in my Scots dictionary, but Webster's unabridged has "corium" from the Latin for leather in relation to the derivation of the name Coriaria (Latin) for a plant used to make a black dye in Europe. A leather dyer? Any help greatly appreciated. Richard Robertson
Thanks Elinor I have this info and was hoping someone would turn up something new. Carol
Hi Listers! I'm hoping one of you can help me with the following two occupations: 1. Coriar 2. Douker or dooker I think coriar has something to do with a black dye, but not sure and there seems to be several meanings of douk or dook. Any help greatly appreciated. Richard Robertson

Hi, my first posting north of the border. I am trying to find how I can to make contact with the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists. My grandfather, John Herbert GIBBS, was an early member and President in 1923. I would guess the Society would still exist and would be based in Edinburgh. Any help greatly appreciated. Peter Gibbs, way south in New Zealand.
The Portobello Reporter Winter 2001 (Quarterly) -- A Safe Find! A few weeks ago I discovered an old safe in the basement of Duddingston Manse. It was large and very difficult to move. It was also in the way! The problem was that it was locked and there was no key. I asked around but no one seemed to have clue what might be inside. So, we employed a safe cracker to open the door. Inside was a treasure trove of old documents and church memorabilia. From the items that were dated we worked out that the safe had been locked since 1983. All the documents have now been lodged with the archivist including a volume titled, "Account of assessments in the support of the poor of the parish of Duddingston beginning 1833". This lists by name those receiving monies from the parish in the days before pensions, unemployment benefit and social security. Also listed are the following legacies left to the poor of Portobello: "Legacy left to the poor of Portobello by Mr Glen in 1845, late Minister of Portobello £102 8s 11d; Captain Barclay in 1847 of Portobello £50 0s 0d; Robert Scott of Mountlodge in 1850, Chairman of the Parochial Board of Duddingston £118 0s 3d." A fascinating series of documents reveals that a stormy debate took place in the years immediately following the Great War concerning the proposed memorial to honour the 29 men from the parish of Duddingston and the landward areas who fell in that terrible conflict. Many thought a remodelling of the Kirk Door, of which the original drawings survive, was an unsuitable War Memorial. The opponents of this scheme wanted to see a cross as a memorial and more fitting symbol of sacrifice. The safe also contained two curiously designed Alms Plates (see above), probably made in Belgium in the early part of the 17th century. On one there is a representation of Adam and Eve, and on the other the return of the spies from Canaan, carrying a pole draped with enormous clusters of grapes. By whom these plates were gifted, or when they came into the country we can' t say. For the past 18 years no one has seen them. If anyone has any information about them I would like to hear from you. It pays to have an inquisitive mind! I am only pleased that we decided to open the safe before we disposed of it. Rev'd Dr James A. P. Jack, Minister of Duddingston Kirk -- Books George Baird's 'Places of Entertainment in Edinburgh - Part 4 - Portobello' is a real must for people interested in the history of the area. Williamina LOCKIE possible married name HENDERSON was still alive in 1955. She is mentioned in a document,& I have the address, in Edinburgh. I believe that she was related to William LOCKIE Police sergeant from Berwick, who retired to, & died in Edinburgh 1959. Was she a daughter, or neice ? Do these names sound familar to any researchers. Mary
Hello Mary, I have a directory "Family History Knowledge UK 1991" ( so it is already 10 years old .) There's someone looking for LOCKIE in Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, who's researched them from 1831 to 1896. He is also researching HENDERSON at Durham, with a question mark ? beside Durham, & has information on them from 1850-1929. Is his postal address any use to you ? Can I suggest you also try the Northum. & Dur. List ? Best wishes, Genny. ----- Original Message ----- From: legarthm <legarthm@levin.pl.net> To: <SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2001 11:32 PM Subject: [EDB] Williamina LOCKIE or HENDERSON > Williamina LOCKIE possible married name HENDERSON was still alive in 1955. > She is mentioned in a document,& I have the address, in Edinburgh. > I believe that she was related to William LOCKIE Police sergeant from Berwick, who retired to, & died in Edinburgh 1959. >From the Dec 7 2001 edition of the Edinburgh Evening News http://www.edinburghnews.com/news.cfm (search for Crabbie) Firm hunts for Crabbie people A LOTHIAN firm is looking to its Leith roots to mark the 200th birthday of one of its products. Broxburn-based MacDonald and Muir Ltd want to find surviving members of the Crabbie family to celebrate their ancestors' Green Ginger Wine. John MacRabbie (or MacRobbie), who fought at Culloden and then dropped the "Mac" from his name to avoid persecution, moved to Leith in the 18th century and set up a grocery business. In 1801 the business really took off when Crabbie's Green Ginger Wine, made from a secret family recipe, became an instant success. The family sold the business to Distillers Company Limited in 1963 and, in 1993, MacDonald and Muir Ltd, Glenmorangie's owner, took over. Lorna McMillan, Crabbie's brand manager, explained: " We've produced a special edition bottle and we would love to track down any of the Crabbie family and give them a case." Hi all, I am new to this list, most of my DOBSON's are from the Yorkshire area, but my g/g/grandfather it seems was born in Edinburgh. He is John DOBSON b 1818 in Edinburgh, married to Faith CHAPMAN b 1819, in Scalby, Yorkshire, married in Hull in 1845. They had 4 children Edward b 1846 Edinburgh, John William b 1848, Scarborough, Charles b 1855, Scarborough, and Oratio, b 1862, Scarborough. Would anybody have any of these people in their family tree. Unfortunately I haven't any idea of where in Edinburgh John DOBSON might have been born. The only other information that I have of him from the 1881 census, is that he formally was a draper Could SKS help me with this please, and put me in the right direction. Thanks in anticipation Harry in sunny N.Z.
Am looking for information regarding Violet HENDERSON born 1 Sept 1857 at Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland. She possibly married Jack Wilson in 1880 or 1881. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Carolyn Wilkinson
I think I have found Theophile in 1881 "Royal Edinburgh Asylum" for Western Dept Edinburgh St Cuthberts FHL film 0223989 GRO ref vol 685-1 Enum dist 10 Page 3 Theophile THENVENEAU patient occup: sailor unmarried 46 male born Edinburgh, Edinburgh Scotland (ie Edinburgh in the county of Edinburgh) lunatic bearing all this in mind I would not be too sure about the details given. there were a lot of patients and can we be sure the person giving the details was careful to check all their marital statuses and places of birth? I dont think so! ;-) This was one of only two entries for this given name in Lowland Scotland. If you go to www.scots-origins.com and check the free surname search you will find: Results showing the number of records with surname Theveneau between 1553 and 1899 in each dataset: Scots Origins dataset No. of records Old Parish Record Births/Christenings (1553-1854) 0 Old Parish Record Marriages (1553-1854) 0 Statutory Index Births (1855-1899) 3 Statutory Index Marriages (1855-1899) 0 Statutory Index Deaths (1855-1924) 1 1881 Census 0 1891 Census 0 Total 4 I did another search with a wildcard, and picked up an extra result in the 1881 census - presumably poor Theophile, and then a third wider search as follows Surname search results Results showing the number of records with surname Thev* between 1553 and 1899 in each dataset: Scots Origins dataset No. of records Old Parish Record Births/Christenings (1553-1854) 0 Old Parish Record Marriages (1553-1854) 0 Statutory Index Births (1855-1899) 3 Statutory Index Marriages (1855-1899) 0 Statutory Index Deaths (1855-1924) 1 1881 Census 7 1891 Census 4 Total 15 It looks possible that Jean BLAIKIE and Theophile did not marry. But I think it would be worth investing six quid in a search of the Scots Origins info, especially as some of the census images can now be viewed on line. Unfortunately the 7 entries in 1881 turned out to be a family called THEVY. Finally, what is the source for Isadore's birth details and what year was he born? By interrogating the index further I found that 2 THEVENEAU births occurred in the years 1870-72, a death in 1873 and a birth in 1874.
