Hello, I am new to this list and I wish you all a very Happy and Safe Christmas. I have been researching my family history for 2 years now and have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. I have just found that some members of my YULE family from Aberdeen moved to Edinburgh at sometime between 1881 and 1891. My GG Grandmother Elizabeth YULE nee WATTIE died in 1896 at 28 St Bernards Cres. Edinburgh. The death was recorded by Mary A YULE her daughter a music teacher. Could anyone tell me if St Bernards Cres still exists? Is anyone researching this family? Regards Rhonda in Cairns Aust
Would anyone with a copy of the 1851 census index for Edinburgh please be able to look up an entry for me to help narrow down my search of the census. It is for the family of John Boyd and his wife Janet Bairnsfather Boyd [born 1815]. This is not a virus....do not delete this file! This message is a virus hoax that has been passed around quite regularly. Please any of you, before posting virus messages post them to the list owner and then we will be able to carry on with our genealogy on the list. Or, better still, check out http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html to check whether any virus is actually a threat or not. It apparently is a rule of the rootsweb mailing lists that viri get reported to the list owner, not the list. I'm sorry if this sounds rather hard but I am sick of all the hoax messages passed around especially at a time when we are still vulnerable to real virus problems. These hoax virus messages are as much a nuisance as the real virus. Jeni Simpson, Christchurch, New Zealand
Hi Barbara, I was really wondering if you had a Susan Kinghorn in among your McKays. I will tell you what I know: Susan Kinghorn b 1837 married 27th July 1857 at East Pitt Street (her home) John McKay 25 Couper Street, Leith Engineer (Batchelor) Father William McKay Farmer Mother Janet MS Mills (I have decided I do not believe this & suspect it may be Miller) Harry Duff minister of South Leith, Robert McKay, Mary Kinghorn; witnesses Catherine Murphy McKay was born to them in Newcastle upon Tyne in Dec. 1857 (she was named after her maternal grandmother). In the 1861 census she was staying with her aunts in Leith. Here one starts to speculate. "Staying" to a Scot can also mean "living" (as in Where do you stay? means Where do you live?) so it may or may not have been a long term arrangement. She was not yet 3 1/2 ; where were her parents? Some years down the track we have another wedding: Margaret Kinghorn b 1861 married 9th July 1883 Charles Kinghorn MacIntosh, Master Mariner (Batchelor) 26 years Father Alexander MacIntosh (deceased) Mother Susan MacIntosh MS Kinghorn (deceased) As Susan Kinghorns are not exactly common to put it mildly, one assumes that it was the same person. Interesting, given that C K MacIntosh must also have been born c. 1857! Any information gratefully received. To Richard Robertson: This is what I found using GOOGLE search engine. CORIAR - could he have been a tanner of hides? Coriaria is a plant. Both the leaves and berries are poisonous. Uses: A black ink is obtained from the leaves, it can also be used as a dye. The leaves contain tannin and are used for tanning leather and dyeing black. DOUKER and DOOKER - could have raised ducks, been a dancer or a thief http://www.birdtours.co.uk/ldbws/winter2000/Localnames.htm The Common Scoter, also known as Douker or Black Dyker, was "by far the most abundant of the Ducks which frequent the Lancashire coast, and is sometimes seen in Morecambe Bay in flocks of many thousands". How things have changed, not only in bird names but also in distribution and number of birds etc. 2. Here it is a reference to Dance ... http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/articles/dance_em_dict.html [Cybist[-e]ter,] vel [Cybister,] [[. e]ris,] [m. g.] [p. b.] [Bud.] A douker vnder the water: al so one which doth tumble. a tumbler, or daunser that t [um] bleth & daunseth round. 3. Another explanation .. this is more fun - http://www.dkeith.clara.co.uk/campbeltownlife/part11.htm Periodically the casks had to be checked for leaks and for evaporation levels, also the specific gravity of the liquid had to be checked, this being done by the exciseman. The latter also stationed himself at the door to observe the coopers who were tapping the casks for loose joints and also to catch 'dookers'. The practice of dooking was rife, it involved carrying in a small lemonade bottle, tied to the inside leg with a string. When the exciseman was not looking and when the casks were at the back of the warehouse the dooker quickly removed the bung of the cask, had a dook, replaced the bung, then placed the bottle at the back of the cask. The dooker then went to the door and was searched by the exciseman. He would then return to the rear in the pretence that he had left his hammer. The bottle would then be picked up, pushed down the leg, and the man would walk out with a gill of almost pure alcohol. When all the barrels were checked the manager and the exciseman signed a book, checked the keys, then locked the warehouse door...................... I hope I haven't wasted your time ... L.
