    2. Hi Folks. My wife’s father was 10 years old when he was put in an orphanage/workhouse due to his mother dying in 1914. The family were living in Pleasance at the time and were Roman Catholics. It appears that he spent most of his time running away until they gave up and let him stay at home. Please can SKS suggest the name of a orphanage/workhouse that would have been local to him. TIA, Regards - Anthony

    3. There were not nearly so many Catholics as Protestants in Scotland, but in Edinburgh there were quite a few and of course especially those of Irish descent. I have been looking for a Catholic orphanage for boys in an 1911 almanac, and came across The Catholic Working Boys' Home which was in Lauriston Place. This accommodated 60 boys who were with tradesmen in the city - it doesnt say they actually got apprenticeships. They handed over their wages to the home but this did not meet the running costs, which were topped up by donation. Of the other charities in the book there were obviously some that were Catholic but most seemed to be for rescuing morally imperilled young women and I could not pinpoint any that were a boys' orphanage. St Andrews Home and House of Mercy for example, has a Mother Superior, but no hint as to the category of inmates. It was at Easter Duddingston. I also found a Catholic Industrial School for Boys out at Tranent. Given that the overarching authority was a fairly large diocese I would not rule this out. These two latter locations would have been considered 'healthy' and perhaps safely away from the dangerous influences of the city centre. cheers Judy On 23 Oct 2006, at 15:58, <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Judy, > Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply, and what a reply !
