    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] Rose St Edinburgh
    2. k c
    3. Thank you to everyone who responded to my requests for a map of Rose St and for information with regard to its history. The general consensus is that the street was a red light district from the late 1800s to about 1970 or so. My great-great grandmother ran a lodging house there after her husband died according to the 1851 and 1861 census. Can anyone tell me what Rose street looked like during those decades? Im hoping that the red light didnt go on until maybe the 1890s? ....kathleen

    3. Cowan's Close does still exist and you'll find it shown at the following link - http://www.multimap.com/map/places.cgi?client=public&lang=&advanced=&keepicon=true&quicksearch=cowan%27s+close if that doesn't work, try any map website and enter the name. The other address is behind Princes Street so they are quite a distance apart. Hope this helps Carol <Hello Listers, I found the following two addresses in the151 scottish census: 9 Cowan's Close, St. Cuthberts 6 East Rose Street South Side, St. Andrews I don't think that Cowan's Close exists today. Will sks with access to a legible 1851 street map of Edinburgh please look up these addresses and tell me the distance between the two? 3. Hello Kathleen, I found Cowan's Close on a modern map of Edinburgh. See http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=326280&y=672883&z=1&sv=326280,672883 &st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=521&ax=326280&ay=672883 I found East Rose Street on a map from 1838. It is between, and runs parallel to, Prince Street and George Street. It terminates on the east end at St. Andrew's Square. I do not know if this modern Cowan's Close is also the historical one. Nor do I know the parish boundaries. Ignoring that, the distance between these two places is approximately 1 mile.
