    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] Marriage Edinburgh
    2. Linda Etty
    3. Hello List, I would also be interested in any records of a military marriage between John MOSS and Mary ROBERTSON in Edinburgh. John Moss was stationed in Edinburgh when he married Mary Robertson about 1824. We have searched all the available records during our last visit to Edinburgh in 2004 without success. We think John may have been from England and Mary was from Kenmore Perthshire. John died before the 1841 census as Mary was listed a widow in Auctherarder Perthshire. Please tell us what you think and be entered into a draw for a grand prize of $500 or one of 20 $50 cash prizes. http://www.youthographyinsiders.com/R.aspx?a=116

    3. I had a look at the Scotsman archive which seems to have quite a few references to the exhibition. From this and other references the statues seem to have been set up in sheds, inside the boundaries of the National Monument. My first thought was like yours, that Forrest was producing grave monuments but his main business seems to have been these big set piece sculptures. From the hits on the Scotsman site the statuary was sold off in 1853 - where is it now I wonder? Perhaps if someone has a current sub to the Scotsman Archive they can give us a bit more detail. Putting the words "Robert Forrest statuary" into google brings up a couple of PDFs which give details of the dates of the shed or sheds. This says that Forrest tried to give the statues to the council in.... 1853. This is the same date as the inventory on Scotland's People and most sources seem to agree that Forrest was dead by then. Its an intriguing story, not least because it seems the council battled for years to get rid of the various entertainments up on the hill. It has set me wondering where Forrests own grave might be. But although this was not a marriage in the established church, any other marriage would have had the banns read in the parish church, perhaps soldiers were the same. according to Wiki, the parish church for the Castle is the Canongate Kirk - even though there are others much nearer. Uh, I did a simple "Google" search by typing in "Robert Forrest+Scottish sculptor" and the following link came up: http://glasgowsculpture.com/pg_biography.php?sub=forrest_r You mean to tell me that this had never occurred to you? In addition, it was really easy to find him on Ancestry.co.uk; however, I don't think his primary occupation was "sculptor" in 1851. That's probably why you were having problems. Interesting, isn't it, that I have never even heard of him before.
