It may be that Jeanie was her "home" name and had no relation to her christened name at all. With a strong culture of naming traditions, many families named their children after the appropriate ancestor (think of all the Margarets and James :-)) but actually had pet names for them at home. My grandmother was always called Jeanie at home but her name was Olive. Her sister was always called Daisy although her name was Myra. So... marriage registration? children's birth registrations? Jeanie would be for the name Jean I should think. Have lots of them called that in my family although their proper names were Jean. Hello, I'm new to this list & new to research in this part of the country - all my other connections are Argyll, Lanark, Dumfries, Renfrew & Perth. My 4xgreat grandfather, George HAMILTON (1794-1887), b. Lesmahagow, LKS, s/o Thomas HAMILTON & Marion TUDHOPE, married Margaret BLACK (abt. 1794-1870). They married abt. 1824 & had several children in the Carnwath, LKS area, before moving up to Kilberry, ARL abt. 1850. Until now, all we knew was that Margaret BLACK was not born in LKS. The census of 1861 for Teretigan, Kilberry, ARL gives her place of birth as Edinburgh, Midlothian. A search of her death record - March 23, 1870 - gives her parents as John BLACK (farmer) deceased & Catherine LOCKIE deceased. The census of 1851 is unclear, but it looks like her birth place was Canongate, Edinburgh. Can anyone add to this new info.? Thanks very much! Mary in Canada
I am inquiring about 1851 British Census Thomas Turner. Born about 1847 Southhampton (County Hammpshire England Thank you Norma
Is anyone going to Edinburgh Record Office that could spare me a couple of minutes looking up a date of birth. I have a Samuel Elder who died 22 January 1975 aged 68 he is buried in Tarquair or Peebles. Samuel was supposed to born 1907 in England but there is no record of his birth I have looked at the records two years either side of 1907. I wonder if his age on the Headstone was a mistake, I'm hopping it will have his date of birth on his death certificate. Samuel parents where George Stewart Elder & Annie Barthram. Any help will be very much appreciated Thank you Bob Elder
G'day List I have a query re the above parishe/s In 1788 til 1792 I have 3 children to Hugh McKenzie and Elizabeth Dow born in Edinburgh Parish. Then in 1793, to the same parents, I have twins born in Old Greyfriars Parish. Are these different parishes? Can't seem to find an Edinburgh parish! Any assistance appreciated Bob in Oz
Hi sandra remember me. I found your Cunningham on the 1841 census. On the Canongate burial records there is a Charles Sheppard age 26 In 65yh regiment at the Castle who died of sore throat in 1824 and I assume his brother samuel Sheppard also in 65th regiment died 1824 of fever. As Sheppard is such an unusual name I wonder if they might be brothers of Cunningham senior? probably a long shot but might be worth having a look. The 1851 census is now online now Scotlandspeople. Is cunningham junior there? if I come acroos anything I'll be in touch

June

> Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 07:35:56 -0600> From: [email protected]> To: [email protected]; [email protected]> Subject: [SCT-EDINBURGH] "seaman" help, please!> > Were there any age requirements for a young man to "run off" and become > a seaman?> > My gg-grandfather (Cunningham Sheppard) was born in Edinburgh 14 April > 1833. In 1810 my 3x g grandparents, it seems, were irregularly married as shown by the following two extracts OPR extract 8th May 1810 in Edinburgh 'Kenneth McKenzie, printer, High Church Parish and Helen Smeal same parish, daughter of Robert Smeal, shoemaker, Jedburgh '. OPR extract September 30th 1810 in Parish of Newbattle. 'Kenneth McKenzie of this parish and Helen Smeal of the parish of Edinburgh having been irregularly married on the 11th May 1810 paid their dues this day'. As the Smeal name is fairly unusual, I would assume that both extracts refer to the same people. Could anyone suggest a reason for the marriage being irregular. Many thanks Rob
I understand Scotland's People has the OPRs for purchase of 5 credits. I wondered if Euphemia might have been married twice, as you've a problem with the maiden name? Hi, June! Yes, I definately remember you! (I still have all the emails.) Scotlandspeople is going to own my house if I don't stay off there! I have everything I can find relating to these people. Now, you've given me a couple more names to look in to. Sandy
Were there any age requirements for a young man to "run off" and become a seaman? My gg-grandfather (Cunningham Sheppard) was born in Edinburgh 14 April 1833. He appears on the 1841 census living with his mother/step-father, age "8". From that point, he "disappears" until the 1860 census where he shows up in a seaman's boarding house in NYC---occupation is shown as "seaman". (He married in NYC, 15 January 1861, moved to Tennessee in 1870.) I also suspect that his father (by the same name) also became a "seaman", at least temporarily. He appears to have been in Edinburgh in Sept 1832 when he married. Then, he "disappears"! Wife and son came to the USA in 1834 but returned to Scotland where she remarried in 1839. Marriage record says she was the relict of Cunningham Sheppard, Connecticut, USA. I have no idea of how long the woman/child were in the USA, when the husband "died", or if she was actually abandoned. Her father died before the 1839 marriage so that could have played a part in their returning to Scotland. ANY thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Sandy Ellis
Hello I require someone filling me in on the detail of Margaret Campbell age 63 in Portobella Dunningston 1851 census with her sister Isabella Graham age 50 and a visitor Isabella Graham age 24 with a baby girl age one called Margaret IL Graham age one born Edinburgh . They are living at 11 Lower St Portobella Dunningston (is it still standing??) 63yr old Margaret Campbell is the Head, Annuiant and mother of the baby??? Says my info I am hoping the baby is the Margaret ELLA Graham born 1850 Edinburgh who went to Australia and New Zealand The family are not there in 1861 My Margaret Ella's daddy was in the army or navy, name unknown Her mummy died early and she is brought up by her aunts who it is said brought her to Aussie Thanks Sandra
YOu can see Tower Street on all three maps listed here http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/towns.html#portobello to orientate yourself, find the point where Brighton St and Bath St cross the High Street, and then let your eye run northwards. I think Tower St is now Figgate St and there has been quite a lot of building in the area. That will be Portobello. Duddingston presumably is the parish. There are some fairly old houses still standing around the High Street and beach areas, but also a lot has been swept away by more recent development. I havent heard of Lower St and since the transcriber has had trouble with the rest, I suggest this was Tower Street. Hi What is a goombah? Grev in NZ
No, she was born to Robert and Margaret Baird in 1859, Carriber Mill, Linlithgowshire, West Lothian. She died at the age of 51 in 1910 from a cerebral hemorrhage (probably what we would call an aneurysm) at No. 10 Mayfield Place, Edinburgh, with her husband, Cornelius Fortune Tait, at her side. Her death was probably quite sudden and unexpected. Does it help that I located a Euphemia and John Nisbet in the 1841 census? However, it appears that she is a 45-year-old single or widowed woman, living with someone named John Nisbet who is only 25 years old. This Euphemia was old enough to have been his mother. They were living in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Yours is a really tough one because I cannot find anything linking anyone named Euphemia and John Nisbet as a married couple. There might be an error in her last name because on my great-grandparents' wedding certificate, James' mother's maiden name is written down as Doull when it was actually Baird. That sent me on a wild goose chase for a while. A marriage certificate is going to be even tougher to track down because Scotlands People's archives only go back to 1855. Before that time, you are going to have to try and track down the parish records. So, I'll keep trying to research James Tait's brothers offspring and will get back to you if I find anything. Good luck with your search. You people are amazing! It sure didn't take you long to get back to me. I want you to know that this really means a lot of me. I am deeply touched that strangers would take time out of their own busy lives to help someone that they don't know. That was an excellent ida about writing letters. Here I was counting the hours time difference between here and Scotland! What a goombah I can be sometimes! And I live in Edmonton, Alberta, so don't "whine" to me about the weather! I'm just kidding. We're really having some up and down temperatures. It's supposed to be -19 here on Saturday night, and then up to two degrees Celsius on Sunday! Ah, well; what can you do? This is Canada after all! And actually, it's my great-grandfather, James Tait, that I'm wondering what happened to. I'm beginning to think that he left his wife and possibly Scotland when their oldest daughter, my maternal grandmother, died on May 27th, 1942, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 33, under very tragic circumstances. I mean, I wonder if their marriage had the strength to survive the loss of a daughter whom they were estranged from. James and Annie nee Heslin had two daughters: Mary, born in August, 1908; and Agnes (she was always called Addie), born in September, 1910. Both girls came to Canada looking for a better way of life in 1928 and 1929, respectively. Mary and Addie ended up marrying Metis men (Cree Indian and French) and were disowned by their parents as a result, plus Grandma Mary was pregnant with my mother, Rosemary Hamelin dit Emblau. I always wondered how well James and Annie took THAT news way back in 1929/30 (Mom was born on April 25th, 1930). Grandma Mary died in Calgary, and Aunt Addie died in Vancouver in December, 1977. I'm just telling you all this information just in case one of my Tait descendents reads this message. James Tait had two brothers: Cornelius Fortune Tait, Jr. and Robert Baird Tait (Baird was their mother Agnes' maiden name). Well, thanks, again - so very much - everyone! Have a great weekend!
