Morning John Could you please look up anything for David Stewart, brn 1809, I wonder where he was in 1841 and 1851. He was a serving soldier, but may have been overseas in this time. I am in the early stages of his travels from Scotland to his immigration to NZ in 1856. From: Jean Coker <[email protected]> Add to Address Book Date: 2007/02/09 Fri AM 11:05:54 EST To: <[email protected]> Subject: Scottish SeaCaptains - Peter Rolland and James Auld John, I'm trying to track down a couple of Scottish seacaptains and also the location of a family in Leith which kept one of my ancestors during the last few years of his life. I'll be back in Scotland the end of March, part of the time in Edinburgh and most of the time in Fife. If I send you what information I have on the 2 sea captains (early 1800's) and the family in Leith (that would be in the late 1700's), would you be able to help point me in the direction where I might be able to find information about them? I can send you more details, but here's what I can remember from memory - Peter ROLLAND - probably born in Cleish in about 1765 - was an officer (or some position) on the BRUNSWICK and was later captain of the ALNWICK CASTLE which had a route to Bombay and China. I have been able to pull up some information on the ships on the Internet and apparently there are ships records at the British Archives at Kew - but I've not been there. James AULD - born about 1800 in Dunfermline, Fife - died before 1859 - I do not have the name of his ship - but there is a reference to him (he was an uncle to my mother's grandfather) in a deed where the title to the property (in Garvock, Dunfermline) was apparently left to him by his grandfather, James MURIE (Tenant, Kingseat of Cleish) - but following James AULD's death (the deed is 1859, so his death was before that) the property descended to someone else in the family as the heir. Up until I found that deed, I'd thought he'd died at birth - he was a twin and I thought he didnt' make it. The deed says he was a shipscaptain in Calcutta, so apparently he did survive into adulthood. I don't know if that's where he died, or just where he priimarily sailed. I have found another reference (somewhere) to a James AULD, who was a ships captain, but it didnt' look to me like the dates matched. I suppose there could have been more than one James AULD saiing the globe! I got to Leith last week when I was in Scotland - but only to tour the Brittania. It was my first time to Leith, so I enjoyed seeing the buildings on the way to and from the dock and am looking forward to going back the end of March to look around a little more. It seems like an intereresting place. Any suggestions of what to see in Leith would be appreciated - I'll add them to my itinerary. Thanks. Jean Coker Jacksonville, Florida >

Good morning Sandra, I have the six Scottish CD's , three Irish plus Cornwall and have found them most useful They contain names and details of seamen " who cannot be located on the 1851 census simply because they were not at home to be enumerated " I have no idea what percentage of those in this category are listed but as I say have found them most helpful. John, Would you mind seeing if Cunningham Sheppard is listed on those CDs? Thanks, Sandy Ellis
I ran across some CDs on ebay offered by a seller in the UK. (I believe the name was "Family History Indexes".) What caught my eye was the Seamens Crew Lists CDs for 1851. There is a Master List (index) CD and several "companion" CDs from various regions in Scotland. Has anyone used these CDs or know anything about them? My Cunningham Sheppard was born in 1833 (St Cuthberts). While I have him on the 1841 census, he seems to have disappeared by 1851. He reappears on the 1860 NYC census as a "seaman" and living in a seamens boarding house. I'm not familiar with "seaman's tickets" and don't know where to begin this area of research---if it's even possible. The price of these CDs is very reasonable and I don't mind ordering them if they are what I need for this research. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Sandy Ellis

I just returned from Edinburgh and stayed at the Roselea Guest House at 4 Kew Terrace. It's the road from the airport to downtown - is right on the main road (which means the bus stops are right outside the front door - going both ways - VERY convenient. The proprietor is David Lapping. He does a great breakfast and the price is 30 pounds (or so) for a single, and something less than double that for a double. I've stayed there 3 or 4 times now and will be going back the end of March for a few days. It is about a 2 mile walk (on the flat) to downtown, has nice restaurants and bars within easy walking distance (or within 1 busstop). It is between Murrayfield and Haymarket, if you are looking at a map. I'll get the details and send them to you later today. I highly recommend him. Hi Everyone Today I discovered that my GGG Grandparents were George MOFFAT from Edinburgh and Catherine WILSON from Leith, Edinburgh. George was born around 1815. George's parents were James & Ann Moffat, from the info I have, Ann Moffat was living in Edinburgh in 1853 when George left. Catherine was born circ 1826 and was the daughter of William & Elizabeth WILSON. Elizabeth WILSON was living in Edinburgh in 1853 when Catherine left for Australia According to the immigration records George was a shoemaker. I would love to find others connected to this family. Best Regards To All Karen Australia

Hello All, I have just taken advantage of the ability to download images of BDM's through Scotlands people and have just downloaded the record of the above marriage.I was expecting to see just a short note about who married awho and when but got the following . Its a rough transcription. George Noteman Gardener Pilton and Janet Gifford comp? and adhered to this marriage written and signed by Alexander McKenzie at Edinburgh the first day of October one thousand andseven hundred and thirty two before these witnesses Alexander Noteman brother and Mary Ogile in Edinburgh. The ? sharply rebuked them for their irregular practice and exhorted them to ? repentance and likewise required them to pay ye Clerk and Church officer what is due to them when persons are regularly proclaimed. Ye s? ? this certificate to be lodged in the Clerks hand. Can any one explain what was considered to be irregular about all this to warrant such an entry in the Cramond parish record? Any one any connection to this Notman or Gifford?. Regards Colin Notman
Could anyone recommend a good & reasonable B&B, please. thanks. Kathleen
