    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] Assistant Pier Master.

    3. Janet He was more likely to be employed at Leith Pier if he resided in Edinburgh. Put " Leith Pier Master" minus the quotes into Google and a number of interesting articles come up. Alex.

    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] Assistant Pier Master.
    2. Janet
    3. I have a marriage certificate of one of my more closer relatives who tied the knot in 1906. William ROWAT who married Jane Hannah REID declared his occupation as being "Assistant Pier Master". Does any one know where I might find any other records of Pier Masters please? William ROWAT was clearly dedicated to the sea, living with his grandfather in Mull, who was a Pier Master there, present at his grandfather's death. Would like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of the Pier in Edinburgh. Its not something that we automatically think of being present in Edinburgh, so I hope it might spike the interest of other listers. Janet

    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] John montgomery and Barbara Allan Campbell search
    2. We are searching the family of John Montgomery and Barbara Allan Campbell and all allied kin in Scotland.I am also interested in which Campbell's and Allan lines we can find as well as MacKay ,Mackenzie and more.....Below is information to clarify whick line we follow. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help and if anyone is related please notify me. Peggy in SC [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) -OMIT THE 2007 IN THIS LINK AS IT WAS INSERTED TO FEND OFF SPAM. If you look in the 1861 Census we find John Montgomery, who was not with his father and mother in the 1861 census in Strachur,Argyll,Scotland. However, we do find him in the 1861 census with his aunt Marth (Montgomery) Kerry listed as an apprentice fleshier to his uncle John Keddie, who was a fleshier or butcher. So now we understand how he became a Butcher instead of a smithy as his kin in Strachur,Argyll,Scotland were with the ""Smiddy'' there, now on the national register.. In the 1861 census, that we find that Dougald Montgomery was the Postmaster. So apparently his son William Montgomery took over the Smithy when his grandfather William Montgomery died, and William's son John after him. Colin was Dougald Montgomery and Jane McKenzie's youngest child ,according to the 1861 census. John Montgomery later opened his butcher shop in Edinburgh,Scotland and had a large family and household and butcher shop help in one later cencus, I have seen. _1851 Scotland Census_ (http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1076&enc=1) about Barbara Campbell Name: <HLT>Ba Age: 7 Estimated birth year: abt abt Relationship: Daughter Father's name: Peter Mother's name: Ann Gender: Female Where born: Thurso, Caithness Parish Number: 41 Civil parish: Thurso Town: Genselittle County: Caithness Address: Guiretettle 1 Occupation: Farmer Daughter Scholar ED: 7 Page: _1_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?viewrecord=1&ti=0&r=an&db=1851Scotland&F0=CSSCT1851_9-0359&F7=1) (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 1 Line: 9 Roll: CSSCT1851_9 Household Members: Name Age _Ann D Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512674) 1 _Barbara Campbell_ (http://sear ch.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512671) 7 _John J M Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512673) 3 _Margaret Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512672) 5 _Peter Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512669) 33 _Thomas Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512681) 16 _Ann MacKay_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512670) 38 _Colon MacKay_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512683) 40 _James MacKay_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512682) 13 _William Maisiod_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512680) 20 _Christian Sinclair_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512675) 24 _William Sinclair_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512677) 15 _Ann Sinilair_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512676) 13 _Donald Stewart_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512679) 18 _Hellen Sutherland_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512678) 20 _1851 Scotland Census_ (http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1076&enc=1) about John J M Campbell Name: John J M Campbell Age: 3 Estimated birth year: abt 1848 Relationship: Son Father's name: Peter Mother's name: Ann Gender: Male Where born: Thurso, Caithness Parish Number: 41 Civil parish: Thurso Town: Genselittle County: Caithness Address: Guiretettle 1 Occupation: Son Scholar ED: 7 Page: _1_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?viewrecord=1&ti=0&r=an&db=1851Scotland&F0=CSSCT1851_9-0359&F7=1) (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 1 Line: 11 Roll: CSSCT1851_9 Household Members: Name Age _Ann D Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512674) 1 _Barbara Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512671) 7 _John J M Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512673) 3 _Margaret Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512672) 5 _Peter Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512669) 33 _Thomas Campbell_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512681) 16 _Ann MacKay_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512670) 38 _Colon MacKay_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512683) 40 _James MacKay_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512682) 13 _William Maisiod_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512680) 20 _Christian Sinclair_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512675) 24 _William Sinclair_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512677) 15 _Ann Sinilair_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512676) 13 _Donald Stewart_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512679) 18 _Hellen Sutherland_ (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1851Scotland&indiv=try&h=512678) 20

    3. Hi John, I have only just joined the list so do not know what dates your CDs cover. Aeneas Campbell, born in Dornoch, Sutherland in 1837, died in Benin 1863, aged 24. I have found out that the British bombed Porto Novo in 1863 and am wondering if Aeneas was a naval man as this seems quite a coincidence. Would your CDs cover this? His death is commemorated on his parents' gravestone and that is all I know about him. Would be grateful if you can help with my quest. 3. Good morning, Never heard of the expression "home" name but like your explanation. My dad always called me "Petunia" (!) but to me that was my nickname and not a home name. James Burns Allan and "Jeanie" Allan came from Scotland through Ellis Island (that discovery was a complete surprise as the others came directly to Canada). James and "Jean" had given Montreal as their ultimate address - staying with friends rather than at his brother's house (wonder what that story was?). Was never able to find a marriage on Scotlandspeople. As for the birth of their children, have not been able to get to the Archives to check anything out. Darn old job keeps interfering with my genealogy research :- ) Thank you for your help, Petunia (oops I mean Heather ) in cold Montreal ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bev Symons" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 04, 2007 11:10 PM Subject: Re: [SCT-EDINBURGH] Jeanie - short for what name? > It may be that Jeanie was her "home" name and had no relation to her > christened name at all.
