Um, now I am confused. If it is a UK cert there should be more info on there which will show which Newtown/Newton it is. But from the original query I am assuming that it is Newtown in Australia. And if that's the case is this a part of Australia would the parents names normally be on the death cert - have they been left blank perhaps? Anyway, Battersea is in London, south of the Thames. Famous for its power station and the cat and dogs home. There are at least 2 Wellingtons - one in Somerset and one in Shropshire aka Salop. With a name like Thomas, the odds are shortened to the Shropshire one, which is pretty near the Welsh border. These places are of course all in England, Edinburgh of course is in Scotland and 60 miles from England by road which on this tiny island counts for a lot. Newtown/Newton is one of the commonest place names in the English speaking world. Which makes it a bit difficult really. There is a big one in Powys, now in Wales, but Powys is a county I think and the boundaries and county names in Wales changed a while back. There is one in Derbyshire, which may once have been in Cheshhire, it is on the Cheshire border. There are lots which are called Newton, but sometimes appear as Newtown. London area is indeed a good place to start looking, since there is link with him having died in Battersea. and the people there will likely know of other places of the same name. I am assuming this is not a Scottish death certificate you have. If it is and that is why you joined the Edinburgh list, then look on Scotlandspeople Liz Don't know where Newtown is but London would be a start for you and you might find listers there willing to do some look ups for you. > >Good luck > >Janet > > Dear Janet I have a death certificate on Thomas Lincoln > > Thomas died 10 October 1902 at Newtown > > Mother Maiden Name Ann - > > Where Born Battersea England > > > > Marriage to Ann Sophia Nevill who was born 1825 >at > > Wellington U.K. > > > > I have never been to your part of the world so don't know where these > > places are in England. Hi Norma, Here, you are subscribed to a Scottish list, not English which is why I asked. You need to check out Rootsweb lists for London for battersea. Don't know where Newtown is but London would be a start for you and you might find listers there willing to do some look ups for you. I think you might have omitted to include that the folk in your family tree have roots in Scotland? You mention births in London? Do you know for sure to be able to post here? . Are you just throwing out enquiries. I understand the dilemma where we have a marriage in England, and their names suggest they might originally have been Scottish - I have a high brick wall along those lines. It really is grasping at straws when that happens. Do you know this is something I never assume. I know that some do have CDs but I really dont know what is on them. I really dont expect that the information I need is there for one moment. People who purchase these PCs shouldnt be pressed to produce data that may or may not be there for the very reason that unlike the rest of us they paid the fee and purchased it. I have to admit however that I dont think we know enough about the CDs that are available. If we did we might feel inclined to purchase them for ourselves. I would say he probably worked for the Granton Harbour Dept, which according to an almanac I have did have a pier master in 1900. No assistant listed though. First port of call for records would be the Edinburgh Central Library followed by the National Archives of Scotland. I am wondering if any one here has any records relating to the Pier. My Gt Uncle was Assistant Pier Master there in 1906 aged 31 when he married. I checked out his given address, i.e. Caroline Park, Granton, Edinburgh but didnt find much else. Does any one know where the Pier Master records might be kept please. His name was William ROWAT or ROWATT and he married Jane Hannah REID. Any help gratefully acknowledged, thanks. Janet
Hello, Is it too hard to look up "Dewar" for me on the CD? Mine are from Edinburgh, possible Archibald or if there are any others at the time? Only if Helen is a daughter in law, as she is shown as Williams' wife. Best wishes, Ann
Sorry Kathleen, Can't find her on the national index either. Best wishes Ann
Hi Kathleen, Unfortunately no trace in Edinburgh. Do you have her daughter's married name? Best wishes, Ann
HI Ann, Thank you so much for looking all that up for me. I greatly appreciate it. I was half hoping that he had married Helen Sheils. Kathleen
Hi Ann & Ann Thank you both for replying so quickly. I dont know Helen's married name, if indeed she ever married. Last seen in the 1861 census, the two women had a lodger named Robert Gossip a newspaper editor. I wonder if he was still around in 1881? Kathleen
