Unfortunately all that I know is that his full name was John Wilson Lang and that his father was also John Lang. it has come down through the family that he was born in Princes Street in Edinburgh. He died in New Zealand in 1916 aged 80 so he would have been born in 1836. Could any one please give me a web site the Edinburgh census I am trying to find my Lang family.from 1841 and 1851 census. John Lang was born in Princes street Edinburgh in or near 1836. thanks Kevynne
On ancestry all it says is Water of Leith I checked other names on page 12 and cross referred with other censuses but it really didnt get me any further. If you do go the route of downloading other pages from Scotlandspeople you might spend a fair bit of money before you found the answer. I could not work out how the numbers related to the ancestry index either, beyond the parish number and the page number. St Cuthberts will cover a large area and Water of Leith could be many places. It runs through many districts. But have a quick look at this link - and I mean quick as property pages get taken down very quickly. Maybe they didn't move between 1851 and 1861???? http://www.lettingweb.com/search/ htmpg_propdt_ca=3_A_cpt=4_A_brw=True_A_cpid=92761_A_Areas=3.htm Judy On 23 Feb 2007, at 16:10, Rik & Shari T wrote: > HI Judy > > David tod and Margaret tod. > > They are in the same area 10 years later in hawthornbank lane in > the dean > park area. > > Ty rik todd > > -----Original Message----- > From: judy olsen [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 10:25 AM > To: [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: Re: [SCT-EDINBURGH] CENSUS INFO HELP > > what are their names? > > > Judy > > > On 23 Feb 2007, at 14:33, Rik & Shari T wrote: > >> >> >> HI Listers >> >> I have info from the 1851 census on a member of my family. >> >> Only problem is I don't have a street name as there isn't 1 on the >> whole >> page. >> I know its in the st Cuthberts area of Edinburgh. Unfortunately formal registration wasn't necessary until 1855. You might find some information if someone were to find them in a Memorial Inscription. If there was a marriage of their children after 1855 you might be able to establish the relationship there. The Parish registers might provide the information you need. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might possibly find the death of a SAMUEL FORREST who died in EDINBURGH around 1830 - 1831 please? I know very little on him just bits and pieces from references in family letters. Thank you. Dorothy
John FOX does not appear on the 1861 census with his family in Edinburgh. Ive not been able to locate him in Scotland. His wife is listed as the head of the family, but married and not a widow. His wife remarries as a widow in September 1868. We know his youngest son was born March 1858 so we have a 7 to 10 year window. We have not narrowed down his death. John was born in 1808, so would have been between 50 and 60. A recent family story has emerged that John was murdered. Details are vague, but apparently his frozen body was found, so winter months are involved. Im wondering how I can find out which newspapers existed in Edinburgh during the 1860s and if there are archives for those publications that may have published a story about the murder? Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you Judy Mann Canada --------------------------------- Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to Yahoo! Answers.

Judy, The Scotsman has a full archive online of their paper from 1817-1950. You can pay for access for a day, week, etc. See http://archive.scotsman.com/. I haven't found any online resource that is as useful at this one, but I am interested in hearing about other sites.
