    3. That's true, and it applies in England & Wales also. I can however share that never knowing my natural father, because my parents were divorced when I was still an infant, just after the end of WW2, I was curious to know when and if he had died. I was in touch with a lady in Canada, in circumstances much as we find here who, having given her my father's name and where he was born, walked into an LDS Center in Canada and immediately pulled the record up there, with a folio number that allowed me to purchase his death certificate. He died in 1996, was born in Scotland and died in England.. hth someone Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "June Duncan" <[email protected]> Hiya You'll not find anything online covering the dates you gave cos all Scottish records are covered by a law that doesn't allow public access to them if there's a chance that the person/people might still be alive. the only way of getting info is to go to Register House in Edinburgh Do you have any relatives living in Edinburgh. 3. The Family History Center near my home has the INDEXes for marriages which were filmed from 1855 through 1956. I found the INDEX hit for your uncle's marriage, a researcher or anyone else can go to New Register House in Edinburgh and view the original themselves. It cannot be photocopied since there is a 75 year ban on photocopying marriage registrations [a 100 yr ban on births and a 50 yr ban on deaths, too]. Anyone can view the original and transcribe whatever data they wish from it. I've done this on 4 occasions since 1989 and spent hours at NRH getting Registration data. 1942 Marriages : Harold Edward YOUNG to Ethel Mary SAMMS in Haymarket, Edinburgh entry #801. I looked up Ethel's entry, it matches with Harold's. I then began to look for the 7 children. Beginning 1929 the mother's maiden name is listed in the Indexes. I checked up to 1949 and found no children which is unusual if the marriage was in 1942. Even if he was gone for the war years, he would have returned sometime and their 7 children didn't just materialize without birth registrations. The only similar surname for the mother was a recurring listing for the surname 'SIM' which is close, but not the same as SAMMS. Those births were in Fraserburg [Aberdeenshire]. Did they perhaps return to England to have the children ??? Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >

Go down to the Mary KILGOUR and James ROBERTSON family. That may be the one your looking for. I looked at Canongate and St. Cuthberts but didn't see a Thomas that fit. Also, you may want to open the Robertson .... sorted by location file, page down to Midlothian and look through the births and baptisms in parishes around Edinburgh. Hope this helps. 3. Hi Vern, In the days before scotlandspeople and Ancestry.com were available (to provide information but also turning precious sharing of free information into a multi million £ $ business!) it was possible to look through the census records at local libraries, record offices and family history centres. Presumably it still is and in a very satisfying way. Now you have identified the page you can find it on the filmed original pages (or ask someone to find it) and print it off for the price of a photocopy. Or am I missing something here? Best Wishes, Jane ps I see that you have now found what you wanted but perhaps others might like to know there are always free ways of helping each other. <snip> ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vern Prescott" <[email protected]> Subject: [SCT-EDINBURGH] 1871 Census - STENSON > Hi everyone. > > I have just joined this list to seek some advice. > > My question is, "Where/how can I get a copy of the census page or a > transcript of the page?" 3. Hi Everyone I joined Scortland's People and got the census image I needed. As Kelly suggested, it didn't help. But, I searched for Stenson Children between 1871 and 1880 and found the birth of a daughter. From the birth record, I now know the wife's maiden name (SMITH - oh joy!) and that they married Oct 5, 1864 on the Isle of Jersey! Vern in Ontario

    3. hi Kelly Thanks for your reply. I will check out Scotlands People. I also have to check out the LDS to see if I can order in a census film, but that requires a 3 week wait and still costs $8. 3. The only way you will be able to obtain a copy is to pay for it on ScotlandsPeople. Just "Google" the name and the site will come up. Scotland is the only country so far that I have found where you invariably have to pay for the information you seek. Unless somebody has access of a CD-ROM for that year and is willing to look up the information for you, that is about your only option. However, the information obtained from Ancestry.com was taken directly from the census page, so I doubt you will find out much more, if anything, than you already know. Also, from other hits this area had quite a few people in the book publishing trades - you could say then that it was an artisan area at the time although clearly the housing stock had suffered badly by 1959. Would be interested to know if your John was in a similar trade as that would be another point in favour of this being the right family.
