Sue, Glad you decided to join the list. :) I, and at least one other researcher on the SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN, have HERKES (later spelled HARKES in my family) in Gladsmuir around that time. Perhaps the following was a brother, uncle or cousin to your Robert or James: Alexander HERKES, born ca. 1749 at Gladsmuir, married Margaret BROWN (BROUN) 3 March 1774 Children included: Helen, Peter, Ann Son, Peter, b. 29 March 1776 at Gladsmuir, married Hellen BURNS, 20 June 1793 at Bolton. Children included: Jean, George (Research conducted primarily by Doreen Baxter) I'm afraid I don't find any HASTIE, or ORPHET in my database. (I do have a PORTER but it was a 17th century English family that settled in Salem, Massachusetts.)
