I would not go so far as to say I'm knowledgeable in military things, however I did research a Scottish soldier. What I found out is that one first needs to establish the regiment (I was lucky, it was in the obituary). All Scottish military records are kept with the British records at the Kew in Surrey. The only way they can be accessed is via someone visiting and retrieving them. Living in Canada, I had to hire a researcher for this. If anyone needs the name of a researcher, reasonably priced, please contact me off-line. If a soldier was injured he may have been pensioned through the Chelsea Hospital, and there is a site devoted to this and those so pensioned. There is also a red book available (try your library or local genealogical society) listing pensioners overseas - if your ancestor was pensioned that is. You might want to try http://www.regiments.org/default.htm The history of the regiments includes the battle honours, which tells which regiments were where, and when. The late 1700s should provide the possible regiments James Bowie could have served in. My ancestor fought in the Crimea and India Mutiny. The India Mutiny has a great site http://members.ozemail.com.au/~clday/start.htm , which includes names of those who received medals. I do not know how many other battles have sites like this but a google.com search should help. Most have re-enactment groups and/or discussion groups on-line, so search for these too. You just may be able to find your James Bowie on-line somewhere, and retrieve his records easier and more cost effective this way. I hope this at least gives a starting point. There may well be others on this list who have more knowledge.
