    1. [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] James Smith b.1773, Tranent, East Lothian
    2. Peter Smith
    3. I am trying to find the christening of my gggf James Smith who emigrated to Canada c.1835 with his wife Patience and 4 (possibly 5) children - they were all born in Aberdeen during the years 1809-1821, as after marrying Patience Austin in London in 1808, James worked as a gardener at Aberdeen, initially in the employ of Peter Milne, Esq., and later on, on his own. I am looking in the Edinburgh area, as an 1883 biography published (in a local Brantford, Ontario, who's who) and presumably contributed by my ggf George Smith, says that his father James Smith "was one of three brothers, born near Edinburgh, Scotland. James was born about 1763, and was the only one to come to Canada" I think George has the birth year wrong, at least it doesn't match the inscription on Jame's gravestone, which fits a birth year of c.1775: "James Smith, of Aberdeen Scotland, June 12 - 1844, Age 69" (the date died matches other material I have) Hunting in the IGI (and Scots Origins) for possible candidates, I found one family which fits the above (plus my guess that his father's name was William - with a name like Smith, you need to make some assumptions): Children of William Smith and Marion Greig (married 15 Jul 1768 at Tranent, East Lothian) 1. Thomas, 30 Oct 1768 2. William, 10 Mar 1771 3. James, 21 Feb 1773 Does anyone recognize this family? If someone can claim any of them, then I need to look further...
