Hi I am just viewing the ORR's for Haddington. My gggg grandparents decided that most of their children would be bapitsed before the congregatiuon. For me this means that the entry is entered in the margin, in small writing, in lighter ink that the normal enties. There are few of these entries apart from what apprear for my family. These margin entries do not mention a baptism date, like a standard entry (is it the date at the top of the page?) Why are they in the margin ? Why would the family have their children baptised this way? What does this mean? I've included 4 entries, two standard & two margin entries. Note that all the surnames mentioned in the standard two entries including witnesses have a connection with my family in Haddington, which is why I chose them. Here they are: Page 221, 14 February 1802 DODS, Peter, Gardner and Christian HEWATT had a son born 30 March 1802, baptised in witness of the congregation.
