Hello, everyone, I have a question about the quality of the IGI data for East Lothian. I am searching for a marriage which took place in Haddingtonshire in 1820-1833 (most likely 1828-1831). It either took place in Haddington itself or else in one of the immediately surrounding parishes of Garvald, Gladsmuir, Bolton, Pencaitland, Aberlady, Athelstaneford, Prestonkirk, Morham, Gifford or Salton. (The family has events in all these parishes except for Prestonkirk.) This marriage is not listed in the IGI, so my question is whether, in your experience, the IGI data is accurate and complete for all of these parishes or whether perhaps some of them are incomplete or full of errors in the IGI. This would help me decide which parishes to look at first. The event is the marriage of Peter LAFFERTY and Elizabeth PEFFERS. Thanks for your advice! Walt Sammis.

Hi Walt, I suggest you try www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as I have found they sometimes have data the IGI doesn't have if that fails you need to look at the Kirk sessions for the parish's as some marriages were 'irregular' ie. they didn't register them but sometimes when that happened the church would admonish them in the kirk sessions failing that if they had any children after 1855 the marriage date will be mentioned on the child's birth registration again that will be on the scotlandspeople site.
