    3. My interests are the family of my 4th great grandparents James Somerville 1760-1834 and his wife Mary Orkney 1769-???. I have two marriage dates for them 5 Dec 1790 BEW Ayton, Berwick, Scotland and 4 Dec 1790 BEW Coldingham, Berwick. Mary was the daughter of John Orkney & Mary Taylor. I'm not sure why two but could one be the church ceremony and the other one the civil??? Would someone please tell me what BEW and ELN mean please? I also found these baptisms on the cd's of Scottish Church Records at LDS: SOMERVILLE, William (M).. C 26 Dec 1792 James SOMERVILLE Mary ORKNEY BEW Coldingham, Berwick. SOMERVILLE, James (M).... 3. Hi Elaine, There are several Orkneys buried at Ayton Parish Churchyard - from published pre- 1855 monumental inscriptions for the parish. In case you know about them I won't pass them now but happy to do so if you think they are of interest. No John or Mary though. ELN stands for East Lothian and BEW for Berwickshire - these abbreviations are known as the Chapman's Code. Try - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Regions/Codes.html for all the abbreviations for the British Isles. The banns would have been called in two parishes - the groom's and the bridegroom's. Best wishes, Eileen in Hampshire, UK http://www.geocities.com/elnalexjoe/lowlands.html

    3. Hello Elaine The two dates you have re marriage of James Somerville and Mary Orkney are actually the dates of their banns (intention to marry) being called in the Parishes to which they both belonged. One must have belonged to Ayton Parish and the other to Coldingham Kay
