Gil Have you had any luck with this location? Having studied the 1850 OS map of the area I think that the suggestion that the name was what we know as PURFLEET. Even if the hand-written P is a J and the F is an S there is nothing close. The parish of Salton had the following Farm Toons, Large House, Hamlets etc. marked on the map. Salton large house Saltonhall Mains farmstead with cottage Middle Mains farmstead Old Mains cottage East Mains group of cottages Hermanston large house in grounds with mains Samuels Town Main small group of buildings Long Naked cottage West Blance two cottages East Blance two cottages Mount Fair two cottages Blind Walls two cottages Blance Burn four cottages East Salton hamlet ribbon development with toll and kirk West Salton group of cottages with paper mill Green Head cottage Woodgate unclear could be single cottage on north east edge of west salton but the name also appears south west of the hamlet. Salton Mill two buildings Gilkerston group of four cottages The description of the buildings etc. are based on my interpretation of the cartographers artwork. Hello George, Thanks for your efforts on my behalf. I have only had yours and one other suggestion, both of you suggest Purfleet. As this is in Essex I think we can discount that name. Perhaps I didn't give enough information first time around regarding the entry. It states Andrew Whinton and Agnes Guthrie in Perflit had a son named Patrick....... The words 'in Perflit' suggest that is where they were living, not where they were born. The date is 4 Feb 1754, Parish of Salton, Haddington, so the place name may have disappeared by the time of the 1850 map. If anyone would like me to scan the entry from the OPR page, and forward it as an attachment, I will gladly do so.
