Chrisrian: The only way to know if there is any truth to the old tree, is to start with yourself and go backwards - your 2 parents, your 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, etc. etc. etc until you get back as far as you can. You must obtain proof (birth, marriage, death certificates, census returns, etc.) each step of the way. Family legends abound in genealogy, and countless hours are wasted searching at the wrong end of the tree.
