Best Regards John A Hansen List Admin FROM BURKE’S PEERAGE AND GENTRY- AMERICA’S SCOTTISH HEROES The second chapter of Burke’s feature on Scottish Americans and their role in shaping US society is now online http://www.burkes-scotland.com In The Dollar to the Moon: Striving for Independence, Sarah Powell examines prominent Americans of Scottish descent, to show that “people of Scottish ancestry wielded a disproportionate influence on life in America.” The article highlights the major contribution of Scots colonialists in the push towards American Independence, pointing out that “as many as three quarters of the fifty-six signatories … of the Declaration of Independence … were Scots born or had some Scottish ancestry.” Indeed, Scottish influence continues right up to the present, as it is estimated that well over half of US Presidents to the present day have had some Scottish blood. Powell looks at the contributions of some of these presidents, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Franklin Roosevelt. She looks also at Scottish military prowess and the “numerous important revolutionary leaders of Scottish blood.” Powell’s article shows that “in making war as in forging peace and pursuing freedom and prosperity”, Scottish Americans have played, and are continuing to play a vital role in American life.
