Alexander was a Hind, who was dead by 1832. His children were born around Melrose, Roxburghshire, & ? in Selkirkshire. After the death of Alexander, his widow moved to Stow, Midlothian. His eldest son James JEFFREY married to Janet Falside, & died Jan. 1898 age 76 yrs., a Gardener. John Jeffrey son, was the informant. 1861 census shows this John age 11 months, born Melrose.
I have a euphemia jaffrey (born about 1811) who married my GGG grandfather David Hardie in Prestonkirk, I have been unable to find any records on her, including marriage or birth, the only notification is on the birth of her 2 children (twins - William & Euphan) in July 1833. I am assuming that she died in Childbirth. I am wondering whether there is any connection, I have deduced that her father may have been a Nicol Jaffrey who was also the father of a Euphemia, Alexander, Nicol, William, Thomas & George. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, 24 March 2002 2:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] Re: john smart jaffrey This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Carol, Thank you for that, I am wondering if you may be able to help with one other piece of information. I am now really confused. I notice it says unmarried next to Euphemias name. Is that a standard notation, if she was widowed would it say widowed. I am beginning to think that her relationship with David may have been commonlaw marriage. Are there any other Jaffreys in Prestonkirk at that time. Also, the 6/19 Crauchie is there a specific meaning behind that. I have not seen this family in my research. But then, I have nothing about the family prior to 1819, & that was the date of the Alexander JEFFREY / Euphemia SCOTT marr. in Melrose.
