    1. [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] Re: Stanners/Stanhouse
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stanhouse, Stanners, Snaddon, Cook, Yancy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeC.2ACI/206.265.652.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Mary, I have information that Walter (Waddie) Stanhouse was born July 7, 1856 in West Lothian, Scotland (most likely the village of Bo'ness or perhaps Carriden). He married Rebecca Yancy August 28, 1876 in Duquoin, Illinois. Rebecca was born June 30, 1857 in Perry County, Illinois. Walter died July 12, 1909 in Duquoin. My mother has a newspaper article that appeared in the DuQuoin Evening Call (newspaper) that gives the most fascinating history of Walter. I have been trying to get my hands on the copy, and alas I will have to wait till my next visit home. From memory: Walter talks about how he went to work in the coal mines in Bo'ness at the age of 8 or 9, of how he immigrated to America and what he had done in and around DuQuoin. Walter was a brother to my mother's great grandfather. But, DuQuoin is small and that is where my mother grew up and she knew all of the Stanhouse families. The Stanners did not actually "change" their name to Stanhouse upon arrival -- rather Stanhouse is the English variation of Stanners (is that Gaelic?), so it was a natural adaptation of the name. I am still trying to find a definitive source who can help me piece the families correctly. I have a lot of names and dates and such and I have drawn my own conclusions about who belonged to who, but that's not a great way to approach geneology. So if there is anyone who can help I would appreciate it.

    3. Mary The name Stanners is still popular in Bo'ness. I live about three miles from there and know of families with that name. You may find that there are still descendants of your family there. I have seen quite a few letters in the local paper where people are trying to trace relatives, so if you feel that would be an option for you, I can give you the address to write to the editor and see what comes up. Bo'ness is actually quite a large town - and was even in the 19th. century. Carriden was the village attached, but it is now just a district of Bo'ness. I am going to be there a lot more in the future as my daughter is moving there on the 22 March! If I can help in any way, please get in touch.
