Hi all, After some very fruitful searching on the Scottish NHS site, I joined this list to see if I can go a little further. I will try and relate what I know so far in hopes that it triggers something with one of you in the list. Forgive me if I get a little too detailed or confused! =) The details of my family thus far are: Jane HERKES, b. abt. 1855 is Stenton, Haddington married someone by the name of PORTER, and had three children with him. The three children were James (b. 1878), Janet Margaret (b. 1880) and Mary (b. 1879 d. 1880). From what I can gather, Mr. PORTER (I don't know his first name) died along with his daughter, Mary in 1880-ish. I'm wondering if there was an influenza or something around this time? Jane remarried in 1881 to a widower named Andrew Wilson THOMSON. At this point, she left her two remaining children with PORTER relatives in Portobello and left to England, where she and Andrew had 4 children of their own, of which one became my grandmother. Going back before this though, Jane HERKES was born to James HERKES (b. 23 April 1809 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian) and Janet HASTIE (b. abt. 1813). They also had three boys, Robert (b. 20 June 1848 in Stenton), Joseph Hastie (b. 4 Feb 1850) and James (b. 3 June 1851). James Sr. was born to Robert HERKUS (b. 23 April 1775 in Gladsmuir) and Isabel ORPHET. The name ORPHET seems to be a dead end as I can find no further links, other than it possibly being the name of a town in Northern England. Robert HERCUS was born to Robert HERCUS Sr. and Jean BRYMNER. Hopefully, this will make sense to someone. Have a great day! Sue in Vancouver, BC
Sue: My Herkes line so far is: 1. Andrew Herkes, born about 1750, married Helen Ure in 1779 in Edinburgh. He was a brewer. 2. Andrew, one of 5 children, born 1783 in Haddington. He was a slater.Married Jean Young in 1815. 3. David, born 1827 in Haddington, married Janet Hastie in 1851. Janet was born in 1831 in Edinburgh, daughter of Walter Hastie, a shoemaker.
