Hello Listers My surname interests for East Lothian - HADDEN-Gladsmuir / Longniddry. SCLATER - Loanhead / Musselburgh. MILLER / MILLAR PATERSON PAXTON SCOTT TELFER (All Inveresk) Regards, Patricia.
The surnames I have the most interest in are: NELSON ORMISTON SMITH LITSTER CAIRNS As well as the above names, I'm looking for anyone who can help me with info on Captain Peter Nelson. As his obituary reads, "he expired in Castlegate". It goes on to say he came off a good Berwickshire stock, and his early years were passed in Mordington Parish, where his father was tenant of Lamb's Mill. He was educated at the Parish School, under the late Mr. Logan and joined the Royal Artillery, 14th Brigade, about the time of the Crimea War. He spent over thirty years' service in India, but returned to his residence in Berwick after. He apparently loved to dwell on the incidents of his boyhood days, passed on the banks of the Whitadder, by Tibbir Fowler's Glen and the Langdyfieldt. If anyone can provide any info on anything in the above, I would greatly appreciate your help. I descend from a younger brother who immigrated to Canada in 1867 but have found myself drawn t6o Captain Peter Nelson. Thank you for your time. Heather
I have a mystery of sorts. Mary SYMINGTON b 1821 Humbie, married Alexander COCKBURN in Dec 1847 Mid Crichton. Her sister Elizabeth b 1818 had a son to an Alexander COCKBURN about 1853 in Stow, Easterton or Lauderdale (all are given at different times on the census returns). I have not found a birth registration or a marriage entry for Elizabeth but on the marriage of the son in Crichton, Edinburgh, in 1875 Elizabeth is given as married to Alexander COCKBURN. The earlier couple Mary and Alexander COCKBURN are still living together in 1871. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Margaret Jenkin Christchurch NZ
Thomas YOUNG b 1810 Channelkirk married Margaret SYMINGTON at Stow MLN in 1853. Margaret died in 1861 at Egerston ROX. In 1871 there appears a Robert YOUNG aged 21 in the 1871 census, listed as nephew of Mary COCKBURN ( m.s. SYMINGTON). In 1851 Margaret is single and there is no child by name Robert living with her. If Thomas YOUNG had been married before how would I know? If his wife had died would the children of a first marriage have lived with him? In 1861 the above Robert was not in the household, only children born subsequent to their marriage. I believe Thomas was son of Thomas YOUNG and Jean TURNER who had other children: Margaret, Jean, Betty, and Lillie, all born Channelkirk. As the families seemed to move across the borders fairly freely, perhaps someone has this family on their tree. Margaret Jenkin Christchurch NZ

No, but an old friend of mine who used to live in Barcelona used to go to Mallorca on holiday. He used to write to me about it and I always wanted to see it. We never got a chance to meet in person (it was a romance, actually), but I still want to see Barcelona and Mallorca. How do you pronounce Mallorca, by the way? Your address just caught my eye! I have kin in Edinburgh with the last name Horsburgh. I was hoping to find one of them doing genealogy on the HORSBURGH surname in Edinburgh, but no luck so far. My gg-aunt Anne BOWIE married Peter HORSBURGH in 1900. I think they resided there, and son Benjamin HORSBURGH married Annie WALKER. Their son Stewart Donald HORSBURGH married Jennifer THOM, and had two children. They are my age, Karen and Colin HORSBURGH. Do these names ring a bell for anyone? Sue in West Virginia

Hi all, Hoping someone may be able to help out. My GGGG grandfather Joseph Bain was born in Haddington in 1760. His siblings are noted as being born in Longniddry. Joseph ended up becoming quite a wealthy mail contractor and coach proprietor in Glasgow owning Morriston Estate in Cambuslang outside of Glasgow. Two of Joseph's children 5 known children were born in Tranent, with the balance born in Glasgow. Joseph died there in 1841. Of his children, they appear to have spent significant time in Longniddry, marrying there and of my GGG grandfather John (b. 1797) children, the major were christened there. The family were probably quite well off from word go, and I suspect that they maintain a residence in the area, (however wills do not indicate so, but they did not list houses in the inventory). I was wondering if anyone might know anything about this family. Liz Hardie
