    3. Maisie asked, " Can anyone elaborate on the pottery industry in Prestonpans?" Hi Maisie, "Prestonpans in Old Picture Postcards" says that a tradition of wheel thrown-pottery existed as far back as the thirteenth century in East Lothian. Regarding Prestonpans- "The potteries were famous for brown teapots, earthenware pipes and 'sanitary ware', but they also made decorative figurines and fine china tableware, now keenly sought by collectors. One interesting product was the disposable pie-dish, sold with the pie, an early break-through for the throw-away society." Pam Hamlyn New Zealand

    3. Thanks, also, for this extra information, Pam. I went to Google to try to see if I could find anything that would verify the potteries in that region, but maybe my mental "index" wasn't working as I couldn't find anything. I'll copy this and put it with my Hillcoat workpages. I appreciate the effort you took to send this. I wish I could reciprocate in kind. 3. Dear listers, I found this comment when I clicked on to Prestonpans, East Lothian, on Google. "In the past the area relied heavily on coal mining in the past. Other industries were also important in the town, including the salt works, soap- making, brewing, brick-making and pottery." Can anyone elaborate on the pottery industry in Prestonpans? My forebear Robert Hillcoat was born in Prestonpans, and is listed as a potter. His wife was Margaret Wylie from either Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Durham. Robert's parents were Anthony Hillcoat and Helen Watson, residing in Prestonpans mid-1700s. I do not know, however, if they were from Prestonpans originally. The Hillcoat descendants thereafter ended up in Paisley, Greenock and Glasgow as potters and weavers. This makes me wonder if the pottery industry in Prestonpans might not have been too successful. I would appreciate any additional information. Maisie Egger (formerly from Glasgow, Scotland) Paso Robles, California

I do have Bill's tree and we have exchanged emails. I don't have my notes with me, but there are one or two mistakes in his tree around some of the siblings in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I seem to recall Mary Schierman being one of them. I'm still working on my stuff and in due course, I'll post my family tree and it should piggyback on Bill's stuff.

I have a ton of people with both surnames in my tree, unfortunately, I can't be of much help. The only information I can provide is from a tree posted by Bill Zehm here on Ancestry.com. Neither of us have any more ancestors for Anna, but Bill shows that the father of the Henry you are referring to was also named Henry. He was born about 1850, probably in Yagodnaya Polyana and he died in Endicott, Washington. He had a wife named Katherine who died at the age of 103 when she was hit by a sled in a snow storm. She also died in Endicott. Henry and Katherine had 12 children. The Henry you refer to died in 1915 in Endicott. I'm trying to guess how you fit into the information he has. Is your mother's name Peterson or South? Even though I have both Anna and Henry in my tree, I can't figure out how I'm related to them, since I can't tie their ancestors to mine, but I know if they came from Yagodnaya Po! lyana, we're related. If you can't find the tree Bill posted let me know and I'll email you a ged file. Brad

    3. Hi Sheena My GGG grandfather was a William McAlpine who was born in 1809. He married a Helen Wright in 1857 at the age of 48 at Glencorse in Midlothian and he was a ploughman at that time. He later became a dairyman and had a dairy at Bellwood, Glencorse. He was a widower at the time of their marriage but I do not know if he had any family to his first wife. Helen Wright and William McAlpine became the parents of my gggrandmother Helen McAlpine who was born in 1859. William's parents were Thomas McAlpine and Elizabeth Anderson and I have not yet checked to see if they had other children. Let me know if you find any connection to this. It's supposed to be our rainy season, but there's a reluctance from the heavens to send us some needed downpours. The assumptions one makes when digging into one's family background, such that, one born and bred in Glasgow has to be 100% Scottish, therefore! Sure! Especially with the large influx of Irish to Glasgow in the 1800s. Aunt on mother's side: "Oh, no you're not! You have one great-grandmother and one great-great grandmother from Northern Ireland. Volunteer Researcher in Glasgow: You can add some English into the mix as an English 4 or 5 x grt-grandmother, Margaret Wylie, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland (1776) married Robert Hillcoat* of Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland. (1752). They, in turn, begat James Hillcoat (wife Helen Young) who begat Jane (Jeanie) Hillcoat, Renfrew, Scotland...and so on down the line until you come to you (me, i.e.) (*Robert's parents were Anthony Hillcoat, Prestonpans and wife Helen Watson (abt. 1751), also of Prestonpans.) I have no information at all on Margaret Wylie (that spelling perhaps), whether she moved to Scotland from Northumberland as a child, or went there after marriage to Robert Hillcoat. Quite a few of the Hillcoats (the Scottish ones, i.e.) came from the Paisley/Greenock areas of Renfrewshire, and worked as hand linen weavers or potters. Should I count myself lucky that I have this much information, or does anyone have anything else to add to the mix, or suggestions, with which to help me? On bended knees for any other information! 3. Hi Cath, I have a GRANT puzzle: My 4xgt grandmother was Margaret GRANT born in 1745 in Ormiston, ELN, apparently to William GRANT & Margaret SNADEN. There seems to be no record of their marriage & no other children but there is a marriage in Fife of a James GRANT & Margaret SNADEN and they had 3 children, one in Inveresk in 1743, the other two in Ormiston in 1750 & 1756 respectively. Given that GRANT & SNADEN are not exactly common names thereabouts, do you think the christening record for my Margaret is incorrect? I suspect 1745 in East Lothian could have been quite an interesting time! Margaret GRANT married William KINGHORN also of Ormiston & they ended up in Inverleith in the mid-1770s. None of their children was called William but they did have a James. Any ideas/suggestions welcome! I have a little 1841 census info but didn't find any Macaulays.
