My mother and two sisters and their families moved to Haddington as part of Glasgow's overspill in the early 1960s. My mother, sisters and one husband of my younger sister, have since died. My husband, children and I visited Haddington quite a few times when I visited my mother and family in Haddington. Some of the children were baptised in St. Mary's ... Lamp of the Lothians...and the Rev. Clifford Hughes, who was the minister there, visited a friend here in Paso Robles one year, and gave us the benefit of his fine voice at a "soiree" in the friend's home. I have a copy of his find-raising cassette tape "A Silent Solace" (I believe that is the title. Sadly, I heard that he developed throat cancer, and I imagine he is now retired. I have only recently found out that some on my father's side lived at some point in Prestonpans. They were Anthony Hillcoat and his wife Helen Watson (born or where, I have no idea) and their son Robert Hillcoat, born Prestonpans, who married a Margaret Wylie, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Durham, Northumbria. Question: As the dates for the above are around the 1700s, I wonder if you could suggest where I might find more information on them. I suppose I could try New Register House, but I would likely have to hire a professional genealogist to go the rounds for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. So your only hope is the Old Parish Registers. the first census was 1841. I have a great-great grandfather named William Vert who married Amanda McClain in Montana I believe, and I have a sketchy death date on him of 1902-3. Could you fill me in on what information you may have on him. Thanks a bunch.

George Greenfield and Ann Allan are direct ancestors of mine. Their daughter Catherina was the older sibling of Archibald b 1778. Archibald m Margaret Brown. Their daughter Margaret married my gggf, William Wright 1831 in Prestonpans. Interesting fact: Margaret's brother George Greenfield married William Wright's sister Jean. Confused yet? I have the descendency of Archibald pretty well mapped out and corresponded with a Greenfield 'heir' recently. Info available if desired.
Thanks for that, Yvonne! Looks like I've got much more searching to do...
