Hi. New to list so thought I list my surnames. All from Haddington, some from Dunbar and Dirleton. I've only gone back to about 1840. Morris, Spellman, Fitzpatrick, Healey or Helley, Mulvey, Reilly, Gilroy, McGowan, Galogly. If anyone is searching these families, I can't wait to hear from you. Thanks, Mary Ellen

Catherine Morris b 1858 in Dunbar daughter of Michael Morris and Catherine Spellman. Catherine married Patrick Fitzpatrick 1879 in Haddington and both emigrated to NY in 1882. The Fortune name comes in on Patricks citizenship papers in 1887 when R.E. Fortune was a witness in Brooklyn. Could this R.E. Fortune be related to the Morris or Spellman families? Thanks.

Although my family seem to have left the Dunbar area around 1840 and moved down south it would be good to see if there is a possible fit. I notice you say that the name Jeffrey is not huge in the area. I have done quite a lot of research into this over the years particularly processing the IGI data. In fact it is a very common name in the Borders, you only have to look at a modern day phone directory. It is most common in Berwickshire and East Lothian (Haddingtonshire), these tend to be spelt Jeffrey or Jaffrey with another concentration around Aberdeen up in the north east where it is often spelt Jaffray. Also there are a few over the English border in Northumberland. Please remember Berwick (upon Tweed in in England all be it by about 2 miles and Berwickshire is a county over the Border in Scotland. A long running dispute between the English and Scots, it has changed hands more than a dozen times in its history and does have a bit of an identity crisis. Hope this is all of help, l please let me have any info you have on your George and John(s). Regards Anthony

Attached are the details of the daughters of the two John Jeffrey’s and that of George Jeffrey, you requested: John JEFFREY 1782 – 1864 Daughters: Catherine Hall JEFFREY 1807 – 1844 Isabella Purves JEFFREY 1806 – John JEFFREY M.D 1810 – 1879 Daughters: Catherine JEFFREY 1845 – 1851 Margaret Darling JEFFREY 1837 – 1911 Margaret Marshall JEFFREY 1836 – 1851 George JEFFREY 1820 - 1884 Daughters: Catherine Hall JEFFREY 1845 – 1885 Margaret Darling JEFFREY 1848 – Elizabeth JEFFREY 1856 – Hannah JEFFREY 1856 – John certainly had some adventures. Have you any idea how old he was at the time. If I am correct the Civel war was 1861 - 1865 so assuming he was say at least 20 years old at the time this would have put his date of birth around 1840. My John jeffrey has born4th October 1840 but I have records of him living in England up until his death in 1875. Hope this is all of some help to you. Regards Anthony
