On the 1841 census my Jackson family are living at "Clarty Burn" North Berwick.I wonder if there is any information out there as to what sort of area it was. Robert was a seaman, as was his brother Mathew. Another brother James was a pilot. Alison from New Zealand

I was writing to tell you that my full name is Robert Thomson Millar. My G.Grandfather was called Alexander Thomson ( b. around 1846 ) and came from Buckhaven in Fife His wife was called Christian ( aka. Kirsten ) whose maiden name was also Thomson. Their children were --- Agnes ( my grand mother ) Robert ( b 1888 ) Kate Alex ( b 1886 ) Andrew ( b 1889 ) Christina Elizabeth They all lived in the Harbour Terrace and he was a Fisherman. I was also born in the Harbour Terrace in 1935.I have my Family Tree for the Millar family ( which was compiled by my cousin Ben Millar ) and have recently been interested in the Thomson line. I am in communication with a lady called Christine Thomson who now lives in Melbourne Australia and lived in Dirleton. She is also tracing her Thomson line and we were wondering if there was any connection between us. She says her family were mainly connected to the Farming community while mine is all Fishermen I'm afraid I am a bit short of dates on the info I have given you but I hope to get more at a later date. I don't know if this helps you in any way but there is just a chance that it will. By the way are you related to the Thorburns who lived in Victoria Rd. in North Berwick? Bob Millar.
Mary The name Stanners is still popular in Bo'ness. I live about three miles from there and know of families with that name. You may find that there are still descendants of your family there. I have seen quite a few letters in the local paper where people are trying to trace relatives, so if you feel that would be an option for you, I can give you the address to write to the editor and see what comes up. Bo'ness is actually quite a large town - and was even in the 19th. century. Carriden was the village attached, but it is now just a district of Bo'ness. I am going to be there a lot more in the future as my daughter is moving there on the 22 March! If I can help in any way, please get in touch. Walter died July 12, 1909 in Duquoin. > > My mother has a newspaper article that appeared in the DuQuoin Evening Call (newspaper) that gives the most fascinating history of Walter. I have been trying to get my hands on the copy, and alas I will have to wait till my next visit home. From memory: Walter talks about how he went to work in the coal mines in Bo'ness at the age of 8 or 9, of how he immigrated to America and what he had done in and around DuQuoin. Walter was a brother to my mother's great grandfather. But, DuQuoin is small and that is where my mother grew up and she knew all of the Stanhouse families. The Stanners did not actually "change" their name to Stanhouse upon arrival -- rather Stanhouse is the English variation of Stanners (is that Gaelic?), so it was a natural adaptation of the name. > > I am still trying to find a definitive source who can help me piece the families correctly. I have a lot of names and dates and such and I have drawn my own conclusions about who belonged to who, but that's not a great way to approach geneology. Hi Marilyn, My Wights are the following: Ellen Wight 1828 to her father, Andrew Wight born 1788 in East Lothian married in Franklin County, KY, his father, James Wight 1755 to his father, another James Wight 1721 Ormiston, E.Lothian to Alexander to Robert to another Alexander 1649 to Robert to John to another John who died in abt 1626. I can go back somewhat farther. I am also connected to Beatrice Wight as she married her second cousin, James of 1721. Would you happen to know the brothers or sisters of your William Wight who married Isabel Wilson? Would you know the siblings of your John Wight born 1818? My Ellen Cose Wight, born 1828 could be promising as she was the youngest child. I have her older sister's name but it would be interesting to see if John were Ellen's brother.
