Jill, Have I asked you previously if the name Ethelbert Mason COWE appears anywhere in your research ? He was age 29yrs., & son of James Trotter COWE a Plumber, & Jane McNaughton Cowe, maiden name Kerr, when he ( Ethelbert ) married Helen MONTGOMERY in 1911, in Edinburgh. Helen was born at Craigend, Stow Village & Parish. If this is a repeat e mail , lets blame it on a senior moment, & the lost Ethelbert. I have John KING . I am very sure, that he is the John KING born Gladsmuir, Bap. October 1770 the parents were, John KING a ccccoal miner, & Janet DUNCAN, witnesses James DUNCAN & George Duncan coal miners. John KING & Janet DUNCAN were marr. August 1766 Gladsmuir. The known children, Baptisms, were Agnes 1768; John 1770; George 1774; Helen 1777; Marrion 1780; Janet 1784; John junior also a collier, married Janet WILSON April 1791, following an irregular marr. & they are my line. I found many KING in the Parish records film, but by 1841, there did not seem to be many in the 1841 or, 1851 census, of Gladsmuir, or Pencaitland. Pencaitland being where my King family appeared after the Bap of the children. I would also like contact with family still in the East Lothian area, & anyone who is researching the family. Let's address the "doing research over there" portion of the question. I've e-mailed Jim a suggestion for travel in Scotland info. found here on AOL. If anyone on the list lives in the UK or has good experience conducting genealogical research while over there, please feel free to share your tips with Jim and your fellow listers. Also anything that relates specifically to East Lothian, for example: If you are physically able to, consider walking the Tyne from Haddington to East Linton. (It's about five miles.) Skip stones in the Tyne. Visit Hailes Castle (it's free) Climb the Traprain Law, if you're a good hiker and hill climber. Visit Preston Mill, just outside of East Linton. (You don't need to be in good shape to do this one!) Don't just drive the main roads, get out and walk around those ancestral towns and villages. Go to a church service on Sunday morning in one of your ancestral parishes. Visit the local libraries and museums, if any. (Check ahead first for times they are open.) Visit a local pub and talk with some of the locals. Not all families emigrated, obviously, but you'd be surprised what names may still be around or known by a few of the old folks! Believe it or not, these may all help you in your family research and will give you a bigger picture of what it was actually like to live in East Lothian. Dear Carol, I found this page very interesting - thank you. I have printed it out ready to study and add more information to my family tree. There are so many Andrew and John Wilsons it gets confusing. The parents of the Andrew Wilson who married Jane Black Eeles was John Wilson who married Elizabeth Stevenson. Once again thank you for the information. Hi Sheila, I have JAMES AITCHESON b circa 1810 Athelstaneford, marrying June 7 1829 at Dunbar to ISOBELLA GRAY b circa 1802. They had 3 children at Dunbar and then moved to Garvald. So far I haven't been able to find parents or siblings for Isobella. James parents were JAMES AITCHESON and MARGARET KERR, but I'm not sure how many brothers & sisters he had. Not much to go on I'm afraid, but I hope it is of some help. Looking for anyone researching the above names and any help in finding records for the origins of my 4th great-grandfather James SOMERVILLE who was born about 1765 at Nether Auchlinsky, Parish of Muckhart, Clackmannan, Scotland. The story goes that as a young man he worked his way to the east across Scotland with a horse and cart and in Dec 1790 married Mary ORKNEY at Ayton, Berwick, Scotland. Her parents were John ORKNEY & Margaret TAYLOR. James who was by then a migrant worker, thrasher, etc. & Mary had their 11 children in various towns: 5 were born/died in Ayton, William in Coldingham, Janet in Wood Hall, James in Cove, Peter in Thornton Lock, Mary in Thornton Mains. My line is through the youngest Alexander born in Springfield, Oldhamstocks, East Lothian, Scotland in 1811. His birth wasn't registered but he was baptized by Rev. Bayne of Eastbarne, an anti-Burgher minister. Alexander enlisted in the Scot's Greys - Royal North British Dragoons around 1831 and served 2 years as Sgt. in 8th Highland Regiment (Regiment of Foot). He then served in the auxiliary legion in Spain from 1835 to 1837 and later sold a book he'd written on his experiences. Back in England, he became Richard Cobden's agricultural adviser but later was disenchanted and wrote articles against Cobden's policies. Alex married Emma BINKS daughter of Francis & Hannah STORY in 1841 London, England and they had 7 children: Emma, James, Francis, Alexander, Roger, Hannah & Henry. The family emigrated to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1858 and Alex died in 1885 in Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada. Elaine http://www3.sympatico.ca/etbrown/esomer.htm
