My ancestor Gilbert Dempster married a Janet Bertram of Garvald around 1750. I live in Scotland and recently visited Garvald which is a sleepy little village in East Lothian near Haddington. You are in luck. Alady called Irene Anderson has written a small book on "Garvald, The Lairds, Tenants and Tradesmen". The Bertrams were school masters. There is a chapter on the "Bertram Inheritance" You can write to Irene at "Beehive House, Garvald, East Lothian and I am sure she will send you a copy of her book. It cost about £1-50. If you have any record of the marriage of Gilbert to Janet I would be pleased to receive it. They had three children: Patrick, Alexander and Isable. Regards Ian Dempster
Hello List, I am new to this list. I am researching my ancestor Hall Laing who was a shipwright in the Sunderland area (Monkwearmouth/Bishopwearmouth). I found his marriage certificate, he married Jane Guthrie in Liverpool in 1799. His first son James was baptised in the Scotch Church North Bridge street in Sunderland in 1801 he was described as "son of Hall Laing" shipwright native of Dunbar NB. His second son was called John (I know that Jane Guthrie's father was James). Would anyone have access to the Parish records in Dunbar or have any information concerning Hall. Thanking you in advance Alison Laing FORBES (now Lafon) France

"The Black Bull", Haddington does not seem to exist as such, but that does not mean to say the building is not still standing. It may even still be a Pub. It's actual address would make it easier to trace. Thanks Doreen, didn't even think, just sent the message off... I have had information from lookups on other lists I belong to, so Scots Origins isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Must make a bigger mental note of that! Bev
Bev I don't have either of the Cesus records, but both the 1891 and the 1901 are on line on the Scots Origins site. If anyone happens to have access to the 1891 &/or 1901 census and has time for a lookup, I wonder if I might ask for one please... Ormiston - Maggie Amos or Margaret Amos and children. They should be Maggie, George, Hendry, Robert, Eliza, David and John. I don't think there were any more. I am also wondering if there would be newspaper accounts or obituaries or burial records held anywhere for Ormiston from 1889. I am interested in something on the death of Maggie's husband, Robert Amos. Thanks in advance :-) Bev Allen Langley, BC Canada
