3. Chrisrian: The only way to know if there is any truth to the old tree, is to start with yourself and go backwards - your 2 parents, your 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, etc. etc. etc until you get back as far as you can. You must obtain proof (birth, marriage, death certificates, census returns, etc.) each step of the way. Family legends abound in genealogy, and countless hours are wasted searching at the wrong end of the tree. 2. hello list, a while ago I sent a request concerning Hall Laing who married Jane Guthrie in 1799 in Liverpool and then moved to the Sunderland area. He was a shipwright. His first son was baptised in Sunderland in 1801 and Hall was noted as being a native of Dunbar NB. Since I sent this email I had an incident with my computer and has lost some addresses. Someone very kindly offered to look up the Parish records in Dunbar to look for his birth (around 1779 ish) but unfortunately I have lost his address. I would be very grateful for any news from this person or indeed anyone else who may have access to Parish records in Dunbar for this period. thank you Alison Laing FORBES (now Lafon) France [email protected]

1. [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] James Smith b.1773, Tranent, East Lothian
2. Peter Smith
3. I am trying to find the christening of my gggf James Smith who emigrated to Canada c.1835 with his wife Patience and 4 (possibly 5) children - they were all born in Aberdeen during the years 1809-1821, as after marrying Patience Austin in London in 1808, James worked as a gardener at Aberdeen, initially in the employ of Peter Milne, Esq., and later on, on his own. I am looking in the Edinburgh area, as an 1883 biography published (in a local Brantford, Ontario, who's who) and presumably contributed by my ggf George Smith, says that his father James Smith "was one of three brothers, born near Edinburgh, Scotland. James was born about 1763, and was the only one to come to Canada" I think George has the birth year wrong, at least it doesn't match the inscription on Jame's gravestone, which fits a birth year of c.1775: "James Smith, of Aberdeen Scotland, June 12 - 1844, Age 69" (the date died matches other material I have) Hunting in the IGI (and Scots Origins) for possible candidates, I found one family which fits the above (plus my guess that his father's name was William - with a name like Smith, you need to make some assumptions): Children of William Smith and Marion Greig (married 15 Jul 1768 at Tranent, East Lothian) 1. Thomas, 30 Oct 1768 2. William, 10 Mar 1771 3. James, 21 Feb 1773 Does anyone recognize this family? If someone can claim any of them, then I need to look further... 3. Hi Lynne, As a new member to this list I was very interested to hear you had transcribed the 1861 Census for Athelstaneford, as mentioned in your email of 4th November. I would be grateful to join this thread, and wonder if you could possibly do a look up for MORTON. Magdalene Morton was my 2x great grandmother, born Athelstaneford in 1804. Her parents were John and Margaret, both born about 1780, so would be over 80. There were 3 other daughters, Mary (b. 1807), Elizabeth (b. 1810) and Isobel (b. 1821). None of them appear to have married so I wonder if there are any MORTON ancestors in the 1861 Census for Athelstaneford? Many thanks. Best wishes, Peter

3. I understand that not all Parish records are filmed yet, some may be lost, some in private hands etc. Also I think that it is only Church of Scotland, not the other churches, that have either submitted the records, or the records found. e.g., The Free Church records are sparce. I dont know where you live, but looking through the Kirk session records, which are not filmed, can give information, but you or someone for you, has to do it yourself. They are not in the same building, I think it is now called the National Library. Are there any list members who live in the East Lothian area who would be willing to undertake a look-up for me of the name BRIER(S) in any parish register transcripts around the River Tyne area please. I am desperately looking for the birth/baptism (and hopefully the parents) of Alexander BRIER(S) who, according to the LDS IGI/AF, was born “in Scotland 9th September 1769”. I do know that the entry was made in the IGI/AF by one of Alexander’s Mormon Pioneer ancestors (Polly Walker) who received the information from relatives at home in England c1890 and mention was made of him being “known as Scotch Alex from North of the Tyne”.
