Hi Elaine, There are several Orkneys buried at Ayton Parish Churchyard - from published pre- 1855 monumental inscriptions for the parish. In case you know about them I won't pass them now but happy to do so if you think they are of interest. No John or Mary though. ELN stands for East Lothian and BEW for Berwickshire - these abbreviations are known as the Chapman's Code. Try - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Regions/Codes.html for all the abbreviations for the British Isles. The banns would have been called in two parishes - the groom's and the bridegroom's. Best wishes, Eileen in Hampshire, UK http://www.geocities.com/elnalexjoe/lowlands.html

Wow!! What a great response. I subscribe to the message board in digest form, and when I opened the message, for a second I thought I was on a different message board. My East Lothian interests James GALBRAITH (my gg grandfather) Currently leaning toward a birth record for James found in the IGI described as Abt 1780 at Anderston, Barony, Lanark, Scotland Spouse: Janet WILSON possibly b. 28 Sep 1785 also at Anderston, Barony, Lanark per IGI Marriage took place 28 Jul 1805 at Barony, Lanark Children of James and Janet: 1. William GALBREATH b. 14 Aug 1808, Dunbar 1st wife: Janet McVICAR - 1 child at least - Janet Wilson GALBRAITH 2nd wife: Margaret WINTON - numerous children Occupation: Stone mason in Glasgow 2. Margaret GALBBEATH b. 13 July 1810, Dunbar Spouse: John CAIRNS 3. James GALBREATH b. 21 Oct 1812, Dunbar 4. Mary GALBREATH (my great grandmother) b. 5 Sep 1815, Dunbar Spouse: James MILLAR, Duns (school master) Possibly a 5th child, Thomas. Name is shown both ways GALBRAITH and GALBREATH. In some old family papers, there is a reference to Belhaven as well as Dunbar. Would love to hear from anyone with possible connections to any of the above. Good luck to all! Hello listers, some of your postings.. have mentioned my names.. my husband's 3rd great-grandfather Alexander MILLAR b 1776 Gifford m. Eliz. THOMSON b. 1781 in Garvald 7 children born 1802-1814 in Haddington direct relation is John MILLAR b. 1807 >From IGI I assume that Alex. MILLAR's parents to be John MILLAR and Alison CRAISE of Yester.. their 7 children were born in Gifford and Yester. and Eliz. Thomson's parents to be James THOMSON and Eliz NEILSON of Haddington.. using Scottish naming pattern.. which this family was ruthless with.. I have traced the MILLARS back past John to his father Alex. MILLAR who married Ann CUNNINGHAM in Yester 27 May 1740 would be interested in any connections.. regards from Georgia, USA Colette Pirie

Not my direct line, however,20 Sept., 1856 George PRYDE age 28; living Huntlaw; a coal miner; father William PRYDE & not married to the mother Janet KING , George married Helen Herriot age 28, Pencaitland, house servant, father John Herriot Grocer, & it seems not marr. to Ann Richardson. I have Robert HOGG married to Ann DAVIDSON 1871 St George Edinburgh. I can only find a note, & not the transcript right now. However, Ann, born 1827, Pencaitland, was the dau. of George Davidson & Marion King, from memory Robert was about the same age. The Davidson family is my line, & if you need the transcript, get back to me, & I will have a search. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Ross - Stewart Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeC.2ACI/1090 Message Board Post: Does anyone have a record of having grand or great-grandparents called William Hill Ross and Mary Wallace (Stewart) Ross? They had a daughter Helen born in 1884/5. I think they may have came from around Glasgow as Helen married her husband Peter McConville in Glasgow on October 20th 1900, but Peter was from Wishaw, Lanarkshire and Glasgow areas. But an Edinburgh area link cannot be ruled out as my great grandfather Peter McConville's brothers seemed to work over in the Lothian area coal mines. If they are your great-grandparents, then we are related as they are mine also. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hello fellow listers: My East Lothian interests are MOWAT and SUTHERLAND, living in Haddingtonshire c. 1851-1891. M6 gg-grandparents, George Mowat and Jane/Jean Sutherland migrated to Haddingtonshire from Caithness-shire c. 1851; George was a shoemaker. The family lived in Dirleton, Haddington and Aberlady, children being born in each town, and immigrated to Canada c. 1891. Good hunting, Marilyn Mowat
George. Only have a snippet of info. William Wallace married Janet Bathgate 20 May 1758 in Saltoun. The children pose a problem. Marion is not listed on the IGI or the LDS, and as she was born 6 months after Elizabeth, and in a different place, I would think she is from another family??? but I could be wrong, you never know in this game. Good hunting.
