    3. ----- Original Message ----- > > Yes, I'm interested in the death transcription for George Pride, s/o James > Pride and Agnes Cleland. He's also in my tree. Are you reading these from > Scots Origins or OPR's? I was researching KING, & the 1851 Census for Pencaitland, showed Janet King unmarried, a laundress age 53 yrs., ( also Janet her widowed Mother as head, age 82 years, ) with George PRYDE Grandson, age 22 yrs coal miner, & John King Grandson 14 yrs.. I had no Bap. for Janet junior, & did not know if she was one of my King family, so I carried on noting the KING & PRI(Y)DE names when ever I saw them, until I found the final link, which was the death Regd., for Janet King showing her parents as John King, & Janet maiden name Wilson. The info' came from either the films of the Scottish Civil Registrations from the LDS, & I think the Death of Janet was transcribed from the Death Regd., when I was in Edinburgh, as I was then able to trawl through each year, to find the death of Janet junior. here is George PRIDE; Gladsmuir Parish, 1855, Pauper, formally a Miner, died Penston, age 91 yrs. Born Cranston lived 50 yrs in Gladsmuir. Children; James deceased age 64 ( hard to read, but was either 1848 or 1868, ) Janet 40 yrs dec. 1831; Agnes 63 yrs; William 61 yrs ;Abraham dec. 3 months 1800; Isabella 55yrs; Mary 53 yrs. Father James Pride , coal miner, mother Agnes Cleland George married; 1. Isabella Moffat dec. 2. Jean Brown Dec. Buried Gladsmuir, & William Pride son informant. I do not seem to have noted either the Registration number, or the date of death, must have been in a hurry. ( 91 years old, was really something for those days, especially for a coal miner. ) Mary New Zealand

    3. Hello there Linda, I have not been able to establish accurately beyond 1800 just who/where my MOFFATs are, as yet. Still very much my work in progress......... (aren't they all) I am fairly sure that they are from the East Lothian area, the later generations are most certainly there. I have been compiling a database of East Lothian MOFFAT Births, Christenings and Marriages which you might like to look through, it is definately a work in progress, and transcribed as I found them so not guaranteed as correct ! http://www.geocities.com/cmoffatnz/ As to KEDGLIE/KEDZLIE I have only in the last few months made some progress on this family. I think that the spelling was very much phonetic and so variations are quite different. I managed to find the people I was looking for thanks to some help from some of these wonderful listers who provided me with the BVRI information KEDGLIE, Henry Turnbull Christening Gender: Male Birth Date: 25 Jun 1796 Christening Date: 3 Jul 1796 Recorded in: Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland Father: William KEDGLIE Mother: Alison TURNBULL Source: FHL Film 1067861 Dates: 1750 - 1826 The names TURNBULL and KEDZLIE appear consitantly throughout my husbands family Beyond this I am still searching, but I will keep your info on my database and if anything comes along I will forward it to you Good luck Carol ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda R. 3. Hello George, Thanks for your efforts on my behalf. I have only had yours and one other suggestion, both of you suggest Purfleet. As this is in Essex I think we can discount that name. Perhaps I didn't give enough information first time around regarding the entry. It states Andrew Whinton and Agnes Guthrie in Perflit had a son named Patrick....... The words 'in Perflit' suggest that is where they were living, not where they were born. The date is 4 Feb 1754, Parish of Salton, Haddington, so the place name may have disappeared by the time of the 1850 map. If anyone would like me to scan the entry from the OPR page, and forward it as an attachment, I will gladly do so. I do not have a web page so I cannot upload it personally, but if anyone is able to do this for me, someone may recognise the place name. Thanks for your time and help. Refards, Gil. Hall. 2. Gil By all means scan and post the extract to me at work please my address there is [email protected] I will take a look tomorrow and see if you are missing something. Just a thought but the Parish boundry may have changed although I did take a squint at the adjoining areas. The phraseology is that used to refer to the place the couple were living in. As most of the workforce were itinerant and often moved each year for the May harvest, the phrase "living in" was often applied as opposed to " of ". Have you contacted the Local History Department (sounds grander than it really is) at Haddington Library try Veronica Wallace ( not related) at [email protected] They are really helpful and could be your quickest route to an answer. As you are in the UK a phone call to that department between 10.00am and 12.00 mid day would be an alternative option. Regards George Wallace

    1. Re: [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] Where is Perflit?
    2. Gil Have you had any luck with this location? Having studied the 1850 OS map of the area I think that the suggestion that the name was what we know as PURFLEET. Even if the hand-written P is a J and the F is an S there is nothing close. The parish of Salton had the following Farm Toons, Large House, Hamlets etc. marked on the map. Salton large house Saltonhall Mains farmstead with cottage Middle Mains farmstead Old Mains cottage East Mains group of cottages Hermanston large house in grounds with mains Samuels Town Main small group of buildings Long Naked cottage West Blance two cottages East Blance two cottages Mount Fair two cottages Blind Walls two cottages Blance Burn four cottages East Salton hamlet ribbon development with toll and kirk West Salton group of cottages with paper mill Green Head cottage Woodgate unclear could be single cottage on north east edge of west salton but the name also appears south west of the hamlet. Salton Mill two buildings Gilkerston group of four cottages The description of the buildings etc. are based on my interpretation of the cartographers artwork. 1. [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] Declaration of Arbroath, 1320 - Basis of US Declaration of Independence
    2. Eileen
    3. Every year at this time, and up to 4th July, the entire US media inundate us with information on the Declaration of Independence, and the men who "wrote" it. One never hears a thing about it being lifted straight from the Declaration of Arbroath, written in 1320. Let's inform our local media of the facts in plenty of time before 4th July. E-mail and fax are the most effective, as letters take ages to arrive since the anthrax scare. The following is from the web page of the Department of Geography at Edinburgh University. You can find the actual document in both English and the original Latin on www.google.com >Although the English armies under Edward II were routed at Bannockburn in 1314, and by 1319, with the recapture of Berwick, effectively expelled from Scottish soil, they continued to mount attacks into Robert the Bruce's Scotland over the succeeding years. The Pope had not accepted Scottish independence, perhaps partially because Robert the Bruce had been excommunicated for killing John Comyn in a church in Dumfries in 1306 (Comyn had formed an alliance with Edward.) Thus the Declaration of Arbroath was prepared as a formal Declaration of Independence. It was drawn up in Arbroath Abbey on the 6th April 1320, most likely by the Abbot, Bernard de Linton, who was also the Chancellor of Scotland. The Declaration urged the Pope to see things from a Scottish perspective and not to take the English claim on Scotland seriously. It used strong words, indicating that without acceptance of the Scottish case, the wars would continue and the resultant deaths would be the responsibility of the Pope. The Declaration was signed and bore the seals of 38 Scots Lords. It was conveyed to Rome and the Pope accepted the Scottish case. > Eileen Herkes, NY
