    2. marg
    3. Hi all, I have just rejoined the list. This is to let you know I have extended my research on the SKED, SKEAD etc families and am tying them to all the towns around Dunbar and into Edinburgh back to late 1600s. Many were blacksmith early on, becoming engineers and more complex related occupations later on. Around Edinburgh many were in the printing trade or fishing folk on the coast. I would love to hear from anyone with suggestions of how to discover more and anyone with connections. To date I have used 1881 census. Britsh Vitals Family search. Cousins etc. I am wondering about any census before 1881? what is available please? kind regards Marg O'Leary Port Stephens NSW

    3. Geoff Thanks for your prompt reply. These parents certainly seem a possibility - although Helen & Peter's first son was John b.6 June 1796. James was b.29 March 1799. I was given another possible set of parents for Helen Burns from a lister - John Burn b. 1753 at Yester and Margaret Lamb. Are you able to suggest if these are possible - or can I rule them out? Thanks again for your help, Doreen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Geoffrey Burns" <gburns@netidea.com> To: <SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2003 8:45 PM Subject: Re: [SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN] Re: shiell > Doreen: > > I don't have any actual event notes, unfortunately. 3. Doreen: I don't have any actual event notes, unfortunately. Given the naming of their children (first girl Jean, second boy James) my best guest would be the Helen Burns born in Gifford and christened on 23 Sept 1770 to James Burns and Jean Dickson. The age would be right as well. I'd suggest looking at the witnesses to the marriage and birth of the children to confirm this if possible. I have no record of the marriage of James and Jean, but they had four children that I'm aware of: Agnes Burn christened 18 jan 1769 in Gifford Helen Burn christened 23 sep 1770 in Gifford John Burn christened 29 aug 1773 in Gifford George Burn christened 30 july 1775 in Garvald There may be other children elsewhere, but that is what I have. Let me know what you find out from witnesses if you look them up. 3. Greetings List: Haven't posted for a while, so I thought I'd try it again. I'm researching Burns in East Lothian (not related to Robert Burns or his brother Gilbert in Haddington). I have extensive info on Burns here so if anyone wants some, I'm happy to share - lots of notes on census and birth/marriage records, including witnesses. More specifically, I wonder if anyone can recognize a picture. I came across some of my fathers photos of his parents and grandparents in Scotland and one is a postcard of Gifford train station. I assume this is the one just south of Haddington, but would love to confirm it. Anybody able to recognize it. I don't believe I can post it on the list, but I'll e-mail it to anyone directly. Some of you might even want to have the pic for your own records. Thanks for your help, and I look forward to your replies. Geoff Burns

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative mail. I have only the marriage listing ( to my oldest known ancestor John Walker) in the east Lothian area of Scotland. There seems to be very little that I have been able to find on the Begbie's and have no way of knowing if we have a connection unless some form of documentation has been found. My information comes from the book "Prestonkirk: The People of 1851" written by Diane D McNicoll. Unfortunately, no one has been able to contact her and some materials I paid her for have never arrived nor have I ever heard from her. How sad :-(. She was wonderful to myslef and my fiance' when we had tea with her in East Linton and I am sure she would be of help if we could find her. The book lists 4 begbies: Isobel, James, jane, and Jean. If you think any of your Begbies might be in there I will look them up and send you what is printed. I hope you and your husband find luck with your Begbies!!!!!!!!!! :-) Jim R.
