    3. From another list: Ancestry is offering free use of the above-mentioned database until April 30. I briefly checked it out and it seems to favor emigration to the States; however, they also feature border crossings from Canada to the States. Many of my Scots emigrated to Canada and later "crossed over". That is invaluable and I am very grateful indeed. I didn't get to call but will call at midnight tonight - my dad is quite ill in QLD and I have been tied up with that, but tonight's the night. I would have loved to have gone to Calliope/Mt Morgan/Gladstone, the whole area when I was at home but sadly didn't get the chance, but next time as they say! I loved my time at home, although it was really to see that my dad was OK, but still, it was lovely being around friends and family. We have a grey day here today in London - about to rain - but its Spring and still a very pretty season. I think it's my favourite. I sent an e-mail to the Calliope RSL as there is a Kirkman on the Honour Board there, also I found out through a friend that 2 of Henry's sons served in the 5th Light Horse Regiment (not overseas) in WW1, which I found very interesting, so I am hoping that they will be able to give me some information as well. Well Liz, thanks again for everything, and I will let you know how I go tonight. Bye for now, and take care, Sharon Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Have been reading this with interest especially regarding the Victorian information. Are you aware that there was an original set of micro fiche that was a copy of the actual records not as input by someone? I have only seen this original set twice in 15 years and in different places - neither set was of any help to me as the information that I needed never existed - a whole family that eluded birth registration. My own family did not go onto the land but into country towns. My friend's family settled in Mt Larcom which is 'up the highway' from Calliope. I will ask her if she accessed anything locally up there. If this had been a 10 yrs ago I might have been able to look first hand for you. My two sisters lived in Gladstone until one moved to Rocky and the other bought a house at Mt Larcom but now both are in Toowoomba. Let me know how you go with the Archivist. You are so full of advice and at least I feel I am trying to work towards something thanks to you. I will set my clock tonight (Wed evening) for your Thursday and make that telephone call. I hear what you say about the shipping records - you are absolutely right, I think I probably need to focus on the certificate, and then perhaps try and find out a bit about their lives in Calliope. I did also find a Land Selection file on archivessearch.qld.gov.au where Henry Kirkman was apparently given land in Gladstone (39) Series ID 14033 ID 40945 and his son William Gladstone (555) Series ID 41093. My gut feeling is that thisw is them, but I didn't get a chance to go to Runcorn when I was at home. A very kind lady at the Brisbane State Library told me that that land selection paper SHOULD have his date of birth and how he entered Australia, so that perhaps is also a vital key. Trouble is I am in the UK so I will need to try and find someone to do it for me from here, so that is another thing I can chase up eventually. I will let you know the outcome of my telephone call (fingers crossed!!). Best wishes again, Sharon Kirkman Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Office hours are 8:45am to 5pm Mon-Fri. Diocesan Records & Archives Centre (07) 3835 2222 Set your clock to Brisbane Time and you should be okay. IF you don't have any luck let me know and I will see what I can do. Glenda is the wife of a pharmacists who owned a local chemist shop. The cost used to be $15 Aus an enquiry. The cost should not be any higher as you have the date and place so it should be a straight forward enquiry for her. The costs add up when you ask for searches for marriages or baptisms and only have a vague idea of what area. The fee should give you a photocopy of the entry. In regard to the Victorian fiche - let's see what comes of the marriage search and if nothing comes from it then I can go through all the entries on the fiche. The are several plain 'Mr Kirkman/Kirkham' in the indexes. I have to tell you I have still not found my ancestor who came out around the same time, anywhere on any shipping. I believe he worked his way out. Liz Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I feel that all is not lost yet! That's a brilliant idea about the church records: The marriage was solemised in the District of BRISBANE in the COLONY of Queensland. Henry Kirkman and Rose Hannah Dempsey were married in St John's Church, according to the rites of the Church of England and the officiating minister was John Bliss. Where/who do you suggest I go to in light of this Liz and if you have any e-mail addresses or telephone numbers I would be very grateful. I can always call after midnight here, which means I make contact your morning time. Your other suggestion re Victorian entry also makes a lot of sense. You mentioned microfiche but can this info also be traced via the internet/website? Also re whether his mother was married or not, perhaps that is the case afterall. Anything is possible. You are a real gem and thanks for the leads - again, very much appreciated. Give my best to beautiful Queensland. Which church were they married in? If it is the Anglican church than you should contact Glenda Murrell, Archivist at St Stephens and request a search for the marriage. The Church entry will more than likely have all fields filled in. My own gr grandparents certificate was exactly the same as your Henry's from the Registry but the Church register was filled to fully. If it was a Presbyterian or Methodist than the Uniting Church archives over Toowong way will get a response. Now if it was a Catholic Church I may be able to help you. GSQ has filmed most of the Suburban parishes and has them indexed on fiche. If you let me know the parish. Congregational records are sketchy but are held at the John Oxley Library at Southbank. These fell under Uniting Church jurisdiction but they have deposited what records are left with the Library. You will have to ring and speak to someone about these records before visiting. At this moment I cannot remember the lady's name - Penny ?? There are a few Mr Kirkmans entering Victoria - would be worth looking at those immigration fiche to see where they say they were from. A couple of my husband's family were proving elusive in Clackmannan and Fife and I found that they were born before Mum had married and this may well be the case with Henry. Yes, I do have Henry's marriage cert. There are blank dashes for his father and mother and also for Rose Hannah Dempsey's mother/father. They were married on 29th August 1864 in Brisbane. Henry's usual place of residence was Calliope Gold fields and Rose Hannah's was Brisbane. Henry's occupation was a miner. Henry Kirkman dies on 2nd April 1909 in Calliope. He was aged 78 years (which by my calculation makes his birth date about 1830-1831). The 'Where born and how long in Australian States' section, it was written that he was born in 'Alloa, Scotland, about 50 years in Queensland' - which by my calculation takes his likely arrival in Queensland to 1859 when Queensland became a state in its own right, separate from NSW, I believe. The informant of the death was his son William Kirkman from Calliope. I have his son (and my grandfather) Samuel Kirkman's birth certificate, born 19th January 1874 at Calliope Diggings, Port Curtis. Henry Kirkman is written down as a miner, age 40 years (which makes Henry's birth approx 1830), birthplace Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland. Liz I am very grateful for your interest and assistance. That is all the information I have. I have searched several websites. One of the last things I can think of is that my father always said that the surname was actually 'McKirkman' or 'MacKirkman', and perhaps the name was changed on arrival in Australia to make it easier. The only other thing is that perhaps he went to USA first. There are an awful lot of Kirkmans who went there, and perhaps he went to relatives. He then perhaps might have arrived in OZ via Melbourne/Sydney, being a miner, he would have been following the goldrush. I know Calliope goldfields opened in 1864, the year he married Rose Hannah Dempsey, and he was already at Calliope Goldfields then. Anyway, that's about it, let's hope we can find Henry!
