    1. [SCT-CLACKMANNANSHIRE] John KER and spouse
    2. Margaret Picard
    3. Hello Listers I have recently been handed copies of correspondence (1908-1944) between three 2nd cousins. That correspondences includes a family tree - as they believed it. One of the correspondents was a Glasgow solicitor William David Ker b 23 Sept 1869 d 6 Sep 1944; the other two (my great uncles) John Skinner BELL (1843-1912) and Robert Ker BELL (1848-1916) had emigrated to Queensland Australia in 1865 together with their parents Robert BELL (1813-1878) and Lillias KER (1817-1899) and siblings. They believe that we are descendants of John KER Minister of Prestonpans (1576-1644) The Fasti Ecclesia Scoticanae, Vol I-II P388 Shows issue John KER and Barbara daugh and co heiress of John Johnston of Elvingston. Andrew, Robert, John, Margaret, Jean and Elizabeth. I am seeking help as to what records are available and how to go about searching to find if there were other children born to the couple. The family tree included in the correspondence includes two more sons - Thomas and David. The lineage claim is John KER marr Aug 1605 Barbara dau of John JOHNSTON | David KER marr 19 Dec 1652 Clackmannan Helen dau of MURRAY | David KER banns 15 Jan 1687 Clackmannan Janet dau of William HUNTER | David KER (chr 18 Mar 1687 natural son) marr 22 Apr 1730 Clackmannan Janet FUTT | David KER (chr 23 Mar 1731 d 1824) occupation farmer marr 10 Feb 1770 Clackmannan Christian dau of William HUTTON | David KER (chr 6 Jan 1771 d bef 1851) occupation miller marr 2 Nov 1806 Stirling Lilleas ROBB dau of John ROB and Lilias ANDERSON Below is a copy of page 4 of the correspondence: Page marked as “4” 140 Hope Street Glasgow. 9th March 1908. Dear Sir, I was very glad to receive a communication from you on Saturday last through Mr. T.W. Lloyd of Melbourne. In writing the advertisement for the “Argus” I used the word ‘relatives’ instead of ‘heirs’ in case it might be thought there was money involved. I should have been sorry to have raised expectations and hope to be allowed to pay Mr. Lloyd’s fee for writing to me. My object in advertising was to obtain if possible a copy of the old pedigree of the Ker family which was in the possession of your father’s custody. I am the youngest12 son of Robert Ker13, Woodbank, Crosshill and I am consequently closely related. You will no doubt be as familiar as I am with the claim that arose about a hundred years ago in the dukedom of Roxburghe and that our great grandfather David Ker14 asserted that he ought to be preferred to other claimants. I have always understood your mother15 was one of the most ardent believers in this claim, while your father16 intended to have the case taken up on behalf of your uncle17, the heir at law, who seems to have been not so well fitted as your father for an undertaking of the kind. In connection with the claim the pedigree was passed into your father’s16 hands and unfortunately no copy of it was kept in this country. My efforts to trace any of the members of your family in Australia have extended over a long period of years and I have never got in touch with them till now. On making enquiries at Ruthvenfield I was referred to your cousins John18 and William19 Bell, Barrhead, who, however, were unable to give me any information. Their mother20 dimly remembered a report that your father16 had died in the vicinity of Toowoomba but that was all they tell me. I corresponded with a number of people in that district but without result, and an advertisement in the “Queenslander” was likewise fruitless. I also traced a cousin21 of your father’s16 in Methven, Perthshire, and his sister Mrs. Smellie22 in the colony of Victoria but these ladies could throw no light on the matter either. The subject of the pedigree has been talked of in this house all my life and has always been of special interest to me. Without the assistance of any family records I have proved our descent from a remote period down to about the year 1600 and backwards to the year 1650. Up to this time I have found it impossible to bridge over the gap. And apart altogether from hopes of succession to titles or money I am particularly anxious to see the terms of the pedigree which your parents are believed to have carried with them, in the hope of someday completing my work. As it is difficult to believe that your mother15 or any of her children would destroy the document it ought to be still in existence and I shall esteem it a special favour if you will put me in the way of finding out where a copy could now be obtained. The time and trouble which I have given the study of genealogy must be my excuse for applying to you and I hope to hear from you in due course. I am. Yours faithfully, William D. Ker12. Letter ends Margaret Picard Queensland 4812 Australia

    3. Hi Stephanie, The only way to do this is to get her marriage certificate from ScotlandsPeople - this would be the proof you need to step backwards. BonnieB Subject: [SCT-CLACKMANNANSHIRE] Laird I am looking for some information on Elizabeth Moir Laird born 1862. I know she married a James Rhind Taylor on June 20th 1878 in Alloa. What I'm looking for is father and mother names for Elizabeth. Or anyone who recognizes her name and has family information would be wonderful. I have searched the maps of Clackmannanshire to find a place called Abbey without success. In 1851, her location was Tron street in Tullibody which is north west of Alloa.
