Hi, I am new to this list. I am looking for information on Rev. Thomas Horne BAXTER, U.P. minister, born 18 June 1824. Place of birth according to 1861 census was ALLOA, CLACKMANNANSHIRE. He married Matilda STREET on 10 September 1856 in Leith, Midlothian. (Matilda Street finished her education "under Mr. Oliphant Edin, where she became acquainted with T.H. Baxter a theological student") He died 11 February 1872 in Inveresk, Midlothian. Have not found him in 1851 census yet & he is not listed with his wife & children in 1871 census. Name, Surname, Rank or Profession of Father, and Name and Maiden Surname of Mother are absent for groom on marriage registration. According to a family tree created by his grandson (Thomas Forbes BAXTER), Thomas Horne BAXTER was the son of Edward BAXTER and Marion HORNE, grandson of James BAXTER. HOWEVER, his death registration says he was the son of James Baxter, Mill Manager (Deceased) and Janet Horne (Deceased). Informant was T.H. Baxter's 12-year old son John Street Baxter (1860-1939). I have not found a match in Old Parish Records for baptisms in Alloa, Clackmannanshire with either set of named parents. I would like help in determining if he was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire and who were his parents. Did he have any siblings who might have descendents researching this family? Don't have the book now. I gave it to my son in CA. Two Paton women married to two Archibald men are mentioned, but I don't recognize the other names as I wasn't looking for them. Both families owned mills and the book is an interesting commentary on those times and people living in that area. Still can't seem to connect my Paton & Archibald ancestors to the ones in the book. Dear List I am searching the Russell family tree. A John Russell, a ship carpenter had married a Margaret Moir, of Alloa, Clackmannanshire on June 24th, 1870. Parents were Robert Moir and Christina Moir (nee McIver). Their children were: Thomas Russell born 26 Feb 1871, Christina Russell born 9 August 1873, Margaret 1877, Janet 1880, John 1882, and Robert born 1889. All the children were born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire except for John A, and Robert FR they were born in Govan, Lanarkshire. In the 1871 and 1881 census they were living at 62 & 41 Castle Street, Alloa, Clackmannshire, but by 1891 and 1901 census they were at 68 McLellan Street and 1 Fairley Street, Govan, Lanarkshire. Margaret died Dec. 12, 1905 in Govan, Lanarkshire. If anyone has these names in their family tree, I would love to hear from them. Joan Letsos Courtenay, B.C.Canada

For about $20 US/CDN you can join and they offer many free look-ups. Great bunch of people on the site...many willing to help. You do not have to pay for a limited subscription either. Poke about there, and see what you come up with. Also look on the Scotland BDM Exchange site. There are 87 Dows listed there. If not your James, then there are links and e-mails of other Dows doing research. http://www.sctbdm.com/search.php Have fun. Signing off! This is where I got all of my certificates. There is also a free census page at: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl with limited census. However, if you family came in the 1820s there would be no record of them in the Scotland census which began in 1841. You can also do a free search for the children's names on the LDS site. Enter the parents names only and it will give children born to them. http://www.familysearch.org/ Best of luck. SJ PS.
