Author: ejandrac1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.clk.general/492.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There were several woollen mills in the Clackmann Ochil Hills area at Alva, Tillicoultry, anad Alloa but think they are all now gone or redeveloped. Strudes Mill at Alva is now apartments There is a Mill cente at Stirling and also Alva but they are tourist attractions, however they should have some historical information and if you do a google search they should pop up. Alternatively contact one of the links at the botom of this site and see if they can help[There is a link to a contact form ] http://www.clacksweb.org.uk/culture/archives/ There is also a book on the Hillfoot mills by Brian Park, but can't remember what it was called but again a Google search should find it. There was also Donaldsons Mill and Paton & Baldwins [Kilncraigs] at Alloa My mother and an aunt worked at the Alloa ones when they were young and several ancestors also worked in woollen mills. Unfortunately there is not as much about these mills and workers as there is about mining in the area. Author: rodohu10 Surnames: Walker, Crawford/Crauford Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.clk.general/199.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Many thanks for your reply. We definitely need to be in touch. Suggest the contacts be offline because there's likely to be a LOT of information to exchange. This includes some that, for now, might best stay off-the-record. My email address: rogerdhughes1(at)gmail.com . BTW, I too show no children for George Walker & Martha Crawford/Crauford. It's my understanding Martha may have died in childbirth in 1796, about 13 months after their marriage at Prince George's County, Maryland. I have no exact date of death for George, but do have some "approximately" possibilities. And I agree that George was an early promoter of a new federal city that would be called Washington, D.C., and a consistent backer/apologist for L'Enfant -- even after L'Enfant fell out of favor with the likes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. You might also find these articles of interest on some later Walkers who might -- and I emphasize "might" -- somehow be of the same family: http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com/RogerHughes.htm Looking forward to hearing from you. His parents were James Walker & Helen May of Sheardale from Alloa & Dollar & Tullibody in Clackmananshire, Scotland. Helen May's parents were George May & Ciceley Carmichael. His siblings were James Walker (father of James Walker Civil engineer 1782-1861), Ralph Walker 1749-1824 civil engineer, architect of the londn East & West India docks,(my ancestor), & others. He appears to have died without heirs. Do you know if he had any hirs. He was married to Martha Crawford. He apparently recmmended Washington to be the capital of America.I believe he was from a family with surveyors, mrchant seamen & engineers, jamaica, america, scotland & England. If it is the right person. I have more info, please send any info you have on his connections with Clackmanannshire as it seems to be the same person.
