You just register, buy some credits and they are available if you need them to review indexes or DOWNLOAD certs. It is an incredible bargain and cannot be underestimated in the scheme of Scottish Genealogy. Your NZ and Australian Archives and Vital Records offices are doing the same thing. Some have free searches, but downloads require credit cards. 3. Hi Kate, It's possible that if Mary had lived all her life in Alva, then many of the people there would have known her before she married, and I'm sure would have been referred locally as McLaren - even after she was married. Once upon a time it was not uncommon for widows to revert to there maiden name, but I'm not sure this was the case in 1903 - and whether Alexander was still alive then. John > >Hi I have a Mary McLaren who married Alexander France of Alva (Alexander was >born in 1815). > >Mary died 14.11.1903 and is buried in a cemetary in Alva. I'm not sure what other records are available (Mort cloth, Church acount records..) that may shed some light. Try contacting the libraty in Alloa. On the tombstone she is referred to as Mary McLaren or France. Can anybody shed any light as to why she would still have her maiden name on the tombstone and why it is 'or France'? If anybody has any access to death registers then I would be thankful for any information, in fact I would be thankful for ANY information re the 'France' family of Alva. 3. Hi Marjorie I have no information on Robert McNair yet. Just know that he married Janet Watson probably around 1891. It is possible it could the Robert McNair born in Alloa in 1865 as Janet was born 1857 in St. Ninians which is very close to Alloa. Have to find their marriage first and then I will be able to tell you his parents. I already have the information you found. Unfortunately, Charlotte Scotland appears in the 1841 census aged 28, giving a birth year of 1813. That lines up approximately with her death certificate from 1886 showing her aged 71, giving 1815 as her birth. These tend to suggest that the Charlotte born in Glasgow in 1805 is not the right one. Also, there were dozens of "Scotlands" in Clackmannan at the time, which suggests Glasgow is also wrong. Thanks again anyway, regards Allan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rye470 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.clk.general/489.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Just noticed your message and did a little detective work as I have all of these names in my own tree. You may already have discovered these yourself but this is what I found. Charlotte died 22 March 1886. Neither parents are noted as the death was registered by her son in law, William McCulloch. He would not necessarily have known her parents names, but he did seem to know that her father had been a "sailor". Her death certificate states that Charlotte was 71 years at the time of her death, making her virth year 1805. A search on OPR's shows only one Charlotte Scotland born anywhere near that time. Parents are noted as Thomas Scotland and Margaret Clerk. A quick look at the FamilySearch site shows at least three children born to Thomas and Margaret. Isobel 1786 Margaret 1791 Charlotte 1805. The large gaps between the births would indicate that there are missing children somewhere. Forgot to mention that Thomas and Margaret were married in Glasgow and all the girls were born there. Hope this has been of some help to you. Regards, Christine. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I know there were several woollen mills in the Clackmann Ochil Hills area at Alva and Tillicoultry, but think they are all now gone or redeveloped. There is a Mill cente at Stirling and also Alva but they are tourist attractions, however they should have some historical information and if you do a google search they should pop up. Alternatively contact one of the links at the botom of this site and see if they can help[There is a link to a contact form ] http://www.clacksweb.org.uk/culture/archives/ There is also a book on the Hillfoot mills by Brian Park, but can't remember what it was called but again a Google search should find it. There was also Donaldson Mill and Paton & Baldwins[Kilncraigs] at Alloa My mother and an aunt worked at the Alloa ones when they were young. and several ancestors all had work in the mills. Unfortunately there is not as much about these mills and workers as there is about mining in the area.
