However, some of the information i.e. dates of birth, on the IGI site aren't always accurate but it does give you a lot of information. What relation are you to Thomas Hall? 3. Hello, Craig-- On the GIBB surname, I have some snippets that may tie in with what you know. The Gibb family in Stirling was well-known, and nearby Alloa was often the port out of which Stirling mariners sailed. A man named Gibb owned a tavern in Stirling. Also, my gr3 grandfather James Forrest was a mariner who sailed out of Alloa in his younger days. He had a son, James Forrest (1787-1810), who was a sailor. My notes show a James Forrest m. Jean Gibb, 9 Jun 1757, Carluke, Lanark. A Jean Gibb was b. 1730 Carluke, daughter of Thomas Gibb. A Jean Gibb was b. 1732 Kilsyth, Stirling, daughter of John Gibb and Agnes Cleland. I have this quote from a 1922 letter of my grandaunt (1855-1928): "Your father will remember the old Miss Chisolm who lived in Queen St. I mind going to see them so much. he. Their name was Gibb (I mean Mrs. Galbraith and her sister) a very old Stirling family." Unattributed notes: 1. 6 Jun 1843--Alexander Gibb, vintner, m. Miss Susan Laing, dau. of the late William Laing, both of Stirling parish. 2. Margaret Galbraith alias Gibb m. George Galbraith, Adj. of the 1st Battalion of the 1st Royal Scots Regt, had a dau. Catherine Morrison b. 1813 Inveresk, son George b. 1815 Dublin, Ann Crawford b. 1816 Belfast. Finally, this from the St. Ninian's Parish Records: Births--1815--George Thomas Galbraith, son of George Galbraith, Adj. of the 1st Battalion of the 1st Royal Scots Regt. of foot, and Margaret Galbraith alias Gibb, was b. Dublin 30 Sep 1815, bp. 13 Oct following in Dublin. Catherine Morrison Galbraith, dau. of the aforesaid, b. ... 1813, Inveresk. Witn: John James Gibb, Wm. Roberts. Ann Crawford Galbraith, dau. of the aforesaid, b. ... 1816, bpt. Belfast. Good luck in your research. Robert Forrest ============================== Craig wrote: I am researching a family line in Alloa. I have a James GIBB, merchant seaman, who died between 1831-1840. His wife was remarried in 1840 in Alloa. I do not have a birth date, but it would be approximately 1800, based on his wife's age. Any information on GIBB in Alloa would be very appreciated. Also, any ideas how to track down ship names, etc., from the 1830s in Alloa would be welcome.

    3. Posted with the kind permission of the Listowner. You are cordially invited to visit www.familynotices.org, a totally non-commercial & privately-owned site. Following the death of a close family member, I was surprised at the charges levied by the local newspaper for posting just a small obituary. The same applies to birth, engagement, marriages notices et al. It made me think through the whole 'public notices' thing and I created FamilyNotices.org which is an on-line repository for all such, with no fees or charges to view, search or post. Unlike a newspaper this has the advantage of being world-wide, free and doesn't get thrown away! Please feel free to help yourself and post anything which is relevant and appropriate - and it doesn't have to be current. Details of 'Auntie Millie born in 1896' is just as relevant as a modern-day wedding notice. If you like it, please tell your friends, for anyone is welcome to post good news or sad news. .........& if you don't, just tell me! Cheers for now, Nigel ______________________________________________ FamilyNotices.org - the free online repository for all notices of Births, Deaths, Marriages, Engagements, Anniversaries and Missing Persons Doing it for free - unlike the newspapers ! Author: designscreen Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.clk.general/501.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tom, You should put this on the FIFE list as Culross is in Fife and not Clackmannanshire. The Scottish Genealogical Society have the Monumental Inscriptions of Fife on sale at: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Fife_MI.html Death records are patchy prior to 1855, but you can do a search on Scotlandspeople for deaths in the OPR's. Of course if you want to see the records you need to pay for them, but the searching is free. Fife FHS produced a Death Index CD for deaths prior to 1855 so I am attaching all GIBSON and all SWAN's mentioned on that - it may be of help. No sign of your folks though! Save the files to your hard drive and rename them from .ged to .csv and they will open in Excel. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: tstevenson1158 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.clk.general/501/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello everyone, I am looking for anyone with connections to the family of John Swan and Christian Gibson from Culross. They appear on the 1841 and 1851 census in Righead Culross along with their family. They immigrated to Ontario, Canada sometime after this and appear on the 1861 census here.John is a widow on it. Even John's father john Sr. appears to have made the trip. Christian died sometime after 1851 but I'me afraid that I don't know where. Are there any burial records for Culross back that far? I have been on Scotland's people and found one but it's not her. It's possible that her death may have been the reason they left for Canada. She was born about 1803 in Tullyallen. Thank you, Tom.
