    1. PETRIE in Wick, Caithness
    2. Hi Norma and list, I've been continuing my research into the PETRIE family in Wick, but my success has been nil! Just to bring my interests up to date, I'm searching for my G Grandmother's parents. My GGrandmother was Catherine PETRIE born about 1850 in Wick. The first record for her is the 1861 census for Wick where she is listed as a farm servant on the farm of a family named BREMNER called Barnyards. I'm told this is just south of Wick about a mile. She is listed as a cowherd, and also listed as 12 years of age, birthplace Wick. The next record is her marriage in 1872 to Andrew MOYES in Glasgow. On that certificate she lists her parents as George PETRIE, Blacksmith, and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, both deceased. Again this record would result in a birth of Catherine between 1849 and 1851. Review of the census data for Wick in 1851 there are two possible George PETRIEs. One the son of a George PETRIE and Helen MALCOLM. Both father and son are listed as shoemakers. Also there is an Irish farm laborer listed boarding at one of the houses in Wick. The other George PETRIE that is a possibility is the oldest son of Jane DALLAS and Donald PETRIE who were married in Glasgow and after the birth of their oldest son George in Glasgow, moved ?back? to Wick where their other children were born. The only record I have for George is his birth in Glasgow and the fact that he was listed on Jane DALLAS' death certificate in 1855. That document also states that she resided in Wick for 30+ years and is buried there. I just received information from a lady whose gggg Grandmother was married to a Donald PETRIE of Wick. This Donald was born 19 May 1734 and died in 1775. He married Mary SUTHERLAND on 9 Feb 1771 in Watten and they had one child, Jennett PETRIE born 7 July 1772. When Mary SUTHERLAND remarried Magnus CORMACK in 1777, George PETRIE, brother of Donald was one of the witnesses. This George PETRIE was born 11 Feb 1728. Other siblings of Donald were Christian born 15 Mar 1724, Helen born 18 Apr. 1725, Isabell born 17 Oct 1722, and Mary born 4 Apr 1731. If any of this stirs those PETRIEs looking for Caithness ancestors I would appreciate hearing from you! George Weston Suisun CA, USA
