Hi Pam, It may be that Johanna's parents were non-conformists, therefore they wouldnt appear in any of the OPR's. This could indeed make it look as though she didnt exist. The National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh have a collection of non-conformist sources although off-hand I couldnt say what exists, it may be worth e-mailing them and asking what exists for Caithness and Wick inparticular. I've found them to be very helpful in the past. One source that you may have overlooked are the records of the East India Company themselves. Terrick Fitzhugh in his 'Dictionary of Genealogy' notes that the "Company's records are a uniquely rich source of biographical material" the records include baptisms etc in India (it may well be that she was born over there). Fitzhugh states that they were to be held at the British Library from 1998 so a search of the British Library catalogue may help. They hold biographical information of a great number of people apparently, and with John being an officer there should be a fair chance of finding some information. As you are so far away I'm afraid unless you can find any information on the Company in books or over the internet you may have to hire a researcher in London. Hope this helps Regards Sara Donaldson in Caithness
