Hello All, I have found a little more on my Groat and Sinclair families. I would like to update my previous post below with what I know of the parents of George Groat and Janet "Jessie" Sinclair. DONALD GROAT was born Abt. 1781 in Yarrows, Wick Parish, Caithness, Scotland, and died Bef. 1855 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland. He married ANN SUTHERLAND March 06, 1821 in Kildonan or Loth, Sutherland, Scotland, daughter of DONALD SUTHERLAND and CHRISTINA GUNN. She was born 1799 in Kildonan, Sutherland, Scotland, and died August 26, 1868 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland. Children of DONALD GROAT and ANN SUTHERLAND are: i. JAMES GROAT, b. Abt. 1830; d. My gg grandparents were George Groat b. May 1837 Scotland and Mary Jessie Sinclair b. June 1841 Scotland. They were married about 1861 probably in Scotland. They were in Capetown, South Africa and then back to Scotland. They immigrated to the US sometime between 1865-1870 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. George was a carpenter. They had the following children: Annie Groat b. abt 1862 South Africa Jessie Groat b. abt 1865 South Africa Isabella Groat b. abt 1868 Scotland George Groat b. abt 1871 Massachusetts Elizabeth Groat b. abt 1873 Massachusetts John Groat b. abt 1878 Massachusetts Emelina Groat b. abt 1883 Massachusetts Christina Groat b. abt 1886 Massachusetts I am assuming they lived in Caithness because my mom always said we were descendents of John O'Groat. That's about all I know right now, but if anyone sees any possible connections, please let me know. I will start by trying to find them in the 1851 census and go from there. Any suggestions welcome.
