As a followup to my query a few days ago, I have now found that some of the Wills at this site http://www.scottishdocuments.com/content/default.asp are now available to download. The cost is 5 GBP, regardless of the length of the document. I have successfully downloaded one Will, and thought it would be useful to have a discussion on the List. I (naively) thought that I would get a copy of my GGgfather's actual Will. What I received was a photocopy of the pages in the Register of Wills. It does give some interesting information about the value of his Estate, residence address, etc, but it does NOT provide even a transcript of the text of his actual Will ("I bequeath my Harris Tweed hunting jacket to my eldest son, Robert "..... etc). When I downloaded the document, I discovered that it had been incorrectly indexed, omitting the first two pages, and giving me an extra two pages at the end pertaining to someone else. I wrote to Scottish Documents about this and by return e-mail they sent me the missing pages. This all worked well, and I am pleased with the service. Can someone who is familiar with these documents give the List an explanation of the nature of the documents? Mine says that on (date) "the following Inventory of the personal Estate of the deceased (name) and Deed relative to the disposal thereof were presented" (by the lawyer). It goes on to list the "Inventory of the personal Estate of the late .... , who died at .... on the (date). Given up for Confirmation by Mrs. (name) his widow, at present residing in Glasgow, Executrix nominate and Universal Legatory of the said deceased under the last Will and Testament executed by him in her favour dated ........" The document then contains an oath by the Executrix that the inventory is complete and that she knows of no other property, etc, etc., and then after the signatures says: "For Deed see Testamentary Record Volume C2 page ....". Can some Lister explain whether the actual Will (or a copy of it) would be available somewhere? And what the "Deed" referred to above would be and where it would be found?
