It's a longshot, but might you have any records of a Thomas Chisholm, born between 1780 and 1805 (probably around 1800) in an unknown location, who died between 1846 and 1850, probably near Wick? He was married about 1825 to Elizabeth Paterson, who emigrated from Wick to Canada with her children in 1851 as a widow. Thomas was reputed to be (abt 1825-45?) a builder and contractor on estate of Duke of Sutherland. After death, business run by sons and then sold to a Mr. Dunbar. Ring any bells? From the Old Maps and Streetmap sites this appears to be a farm rather than a village. Can anyone give me more information about this as I am looking for if possible an old and modern photo to include in a family memoir that I am putting together for my mother's 80th birthday. 1. 1841 Scotland Free Census Project
    2. Jennifer Gribble
    3. I am excited to announce the launch of the Scotland Free Census project. This is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe ALL the UK 19th century census returns to create an online 'free-to-view' database. We have a project covering the 1841 returns for Ayrshire and would like to recruit organizers to cover the rest of the 1841 Scottish returns. Organizers recruit and supervise a team of volunteers to transcribe a county or part of a county. The area you cover is up to you. To be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. This is a global on-line project for ordinary family historians who are interested in contributing to their hobby. If, like us, you believe that this information should be freely available and available for free, just drop me a line at jgribble@speakeasy.org More information on the project can be found at: http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html Thank you, Jennifer Gribble P.S. I am unable to monitor this list very frequently so please email me directly with any questions. 3. Hi Pam Thankyou for that. I have both her marriage & death certificates, and she is Jessie on both of them. Is it likely that she would have been christened Janet in Scotland, and use Jessie on official Australian documents? Her granddaughter, my grandmother, was christened Jessie. I used to think it was short for Jessica, but it was just Jessie. BTW, no parents are listed on either certificate. regards Lyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Cook" <pamcook@inet.net.nz> To: "Lyn Wolf" <lawolf@murraytel.com.au> Sent: Wednesday, May 15, 2002 9:35 PM Subject: Re: Jessie Tait born abt 1819 > Hi Lyn > > Jessie is also Janet which is the more formal name. 3. Tonight on TVO (TV Ontario) at 10:00 pm (Eastern) there is a programme called: "Jutland: Battle of the Dreadnoughts". If you have ancestors in the Royal Navy in WWI, you might try to check this out if you live within TVO's broadcast range. (i know that parts of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York, at the LEAST, can receive it.) My ancestors on two branches entirely are from Caithness, Scotland and several families were decimated when just one of the ships involved, the H.M.S. Invincible was sunk leaving only a single survivor. Namaste, Laurie (IBSSG, RAOGK Volunteer)

    2. Brial
    3. Hi! My name is Kate Brial. I am researching my ancestors - the Taylor and Fletcher families from Wick, Caithness. Although Peter Taylor (my great great grandfather) was born in Aberdeen, he moved to Wick where he met and married Ann Fletcher in 1857. My great grandfather, Peter Fletcher Taylor (1861) was born in Wick. His siblings were sisters Margaret Taylor born Wick in 1858 - she died before 1909 (whereabouts unknown), and Ann Taylor born 1862 (believed born in Aberdeen). Ann was still alive in 1914. Thomas Fletcher was born in Edinburgh (about 1794). He married Margaret Crane (born about 1794 - Edinburgh). They married in Edinburgh in 1812 but had moved to Wick by about 1820. Thomas was a ropemaker. They had eight children including my great great grandmother - Ann Fletcher who became the wife of Peter Taylor. Both Thomas and his wife Margaret died at Wick in 1873 only a few months apart. I would be grateful for any help in learning more information about my ancestors and will happily reciprocate information where I can. Thanking you in anticiption. KATE BRIAL

    2. I am researching the name RYRIE. Most of my direct line were originally from the Caithness area. There are many Ryrie's from Aberdeen and I am wondering if anyone doing research on the Ryrie name can connect their lines to those Ryrie's who lived in the Aberdeen area. If so, please contact me. I would like to find if those names listed as being from Aberdeen connect to my lines in any way. Thanks. Lynn M.
